Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2006 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre Flawed

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Served double blind to me. Shot. Premoxed or just ordinary over-oxidized (a bottle or storage problem?) Obviously still a Chablis but the quality that should be here is not evident. On the reveal, very disappointing. I don’t recall drinking a premoxed Raveneau before ...

  • 2014 Domaine Servin Chablis Grand Cru Bougros 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Brief note. Served double blind to me. Clearly Grand Cru quality with Chablis typicity. Chalky with a touch of salinity but full volume and weight. Racy yet balanced acidity. Very good!

  • 2002 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel #12 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Brief note. Served to me double blind. I picked the wine as Mosel but thought it a lot younger. A stunning wine showing - after some initial, restrained turpentine - honeycomb, burnt caramel, crushed wet granite, nectarine, apricot and lychee. Also some attractive white florals. Drinking well now.

  • 2006 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes Vieille Vigne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Brief note of a wine served double blind to me. A dark nose: black spices, dark cherries and other black fruit and some wet soil. Also lifted and perfumed with violets and other dark florals. Drinking beautifully. Austere and crystalline, I picked its 2006 character, but not it as a Fourrier. Very good. Drink soon though.

  • 2007 Domaine Bruno Clair Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Brief note of a wine I served double blind to friends. Dark colour. Classic, serious Gevrey Grand Cru bouquet. Dark spices, grilled smoky meats, damp peaty soil, black fruit and wet iron. In the mouth, serious, dense and hugely powerful. Earthy with mushrooms, black cherries and blackberries. Iron at its core. Still relatively closed and tannic - give it 3+ more years. Grungy with bright acidity. Great with my beef dish.
