Eastside Tasting Group does White Burgundy

Only our second in-person tasting (everyone fully vaccinated), out on the deck, a lovely evening.

As we arrived and nibbled cheese and gougeres, this was a nice way to get started.

• 1996 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut La Grande Dame

  France, Champagne

  Deep color, toasty, biscuit, rich. A hint of cork on the initial approach? Retasted at the end of the evening, and it is definitely corked.

• 2015 The Eyrie Vineyards Chardonnay Original Vines

  USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

  Lemon curd, very creamy, mineral, floral, honeysuckle. A bit tropical. Bob and I both thought this was very new world in style. I assumed something from the Mâcon rather than picking this as a New World ringer though. Quite tasty!

  Mmmm, flint, lemon, mineral, young and steely, I simply LOVE this! Taut, not austere, but at once assertive yet with focus and restraint. I could drink this for days!

• 2002 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

  Deep color, hazelnut, definite maturity. A little bitter and astringent on the finish at first, but this has nice acidity that improves with air. Upon reveal, clearly this was mature and in pretty good shape.

• 2004 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot

  Wow, a BIG wine, really concentrated, flinty. Is this a Meursault? It has that butter-brickle snap to it. Getting a little smoky, I really like where this goes with more air, crackling minerality, just utter class.

  Really ripe, tropical, flinty, smoke and spearmint. Mmm, this is vibrant, packed with fruit, packed with mineral, juicy, surprisingly complex and layered for a basic Bourgogne.

  Wow, this is the bee's knees. Amazing energy, some oak and Chardonnay funk, love the palate, such zing, a real crowd pleaser.

  From magnum. Mmmm, smoky, deep, coffee and black cherry. This is still young and relatively primary but utterly delicious and rounding into early maturity.
