Introduction

Belated title celebrations for Liverpool's 2018/19 Premier League triumph given the COVID restrictions which precluded celebrations last year. All of the wines from the year during which Liverpool last won the title, 1990.

Flight 1 - Champagne for starters (1 Note)

  • 1990 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Initial glass was too cold and we should probably have decanted as the final glass from the bottle was the best.

Very soft bubbles upon pouring which ceased within minutes of sitting in the glass. Definite hint of sherry on both the nose and palate. Toasted almonds. Not the longest length. Overall a lovely champagne, but I recall this being far better 20 years ago when I last had it.

Flight 2 - The main event (2 Notes)

Served with beef picanha on the BBQ.

  • 1990 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

performed better than the last bottle drunk back in 2015, but it didn't reach the heights expected.

Classic Bordeaux on the nose and palate with blackberry, cigar and cedar. Very decent length.

  • 1990 Penfolds Grange 97 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Sentimental bottle as this was purchased in a mixed case from the Australian Wine Society with my very first pay check after university. If only I knew then what I know now - I'd have purchased a truckload!

Explosive Grange nose of sweet vanilla oak and black fruits. Structure and acidy holding everything in place still and it has silky-fine tannins. Unbelievably long length.

This really deserved more time in the decanter (we only gave it an hour on account of its age). Score is from the first glasses not the final one. Will really have to go some to have a better bottle this year.

Flight 3 - A little something for dessert (1 Note)

  • 1990 Château d'Yquem 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Deep amber/golden colour with the contents of the bottle almost matching the script on the bottle. VA immediately apparent on the nose along with marmalade and ripe peaches. Viscous in the mouth and lovely length.

Missing the acidity I was expecting, but everything else was wonderful.

Closing

In a not-too-shabby line-up, the Grange was head & shoulders above the others. Power, poise and still unbelievably youthful it was WOTN for everyone. Hopefully we will be able to do this again in less than 30 years!
