Introduction

Hartenberg wines sent to Oinoscent by the winery via the importer in Germany after they shaw my tasting of Kershaw wines.
The wine came in the midst of a serious heatwave (46-47o C), rested at Oinoscent for weeks before tasting them,
Not impressed with the wines, they felt, outdated, lacking depth, fruit, excess heat from alcohol

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2016 Hartenberg The Megan

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    Tasted at Oinoscent
The wine shows bright deep ruby colour.
In the nose the wine shows ripe fruit, heavily based in oak, tobacco, soke and a bit gamey with a spicy frame.
In the palate, the wine shows medium body, ripe juicy red fruit, medium tannins, a bit leathery with alcohol heat and medium finish

  • 2016 Hartenberg Shiraz Gravel Hill

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    Tasted at Oinoscent
The wine shows dense deep colour
In the nose the wine shows a rather confused character, a bit of ripe fresh black fruit, a touch of oak and handful of spices.
In the palate, the wine shows overripe to dried black fruit, medium tannins, alcohol heat and medium finish
    --/--
Tasted again the next day, the wine had cleared up, the fruit was far more on the red side, the spices were defined but still backed a lot of heat.

  • 2018 Hartenberg Cabernet Sauvignon

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    Tasted at Oinoscent
20 months in 225lt oak barrels 50% of which were new
The wine shows bright clear red colour
In the nose, the wine presents a "typical" and a bit subdued varietal character, ripe fresh currant, a blit capsicum freshness right in the middle with a fine thin oak frame.
In the palate, the wine shows a refined character, fruit, peppers, fine tannins, a touch of alcohol heat but lacking depth and complexity though, ends with medium finish.
If you consider the price tag though, its pretty good

  • 2016 Hartenberg The MacKenzie

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    Tasted at Oinoscent
The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec
The wine shows deep ruby colour.
In the nose, the wine is dominated by cabernet pepper with a nice ripe red and black fruit all around it. The nose offers a subtle sweet spice note that it quite welcoming.
In the palate, the wine feels the most balanced of the group. The tannins feel more dense and tight. The fruit is more red than black, with coffee notes, spice notes, the oak is more upfront, with chocolate too. The alcohol burn is more obvious too. The wine shows medium body and long finish .
It feels more aggressive than the rest at this point but also the most complex
