Introduction

A few nebbiolo lovers got together after a long Covid induced break. We met in Baltimore for a weekend of nebbiolo. One of us came down form NYC and I from Tucson. HK hosted and made some fantastic food to go with the dinner. We ate outside in the veranda and sat down with some fine bottles of wine.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1971 Filippo Sobrero & Figli Barolo 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

A lovely mature nose. Red fruited nebbiolo fruit, rose petal, some porcini, and subtle medicinal notes. Midweighted, sappy, and graceful on the palate with a textural resemblance, that I am not sure if it is power of suggestion, that had but some echoes of the 01 Monprivato the night before. Drinking extremely well and while I suspect it will hold, I cannot see a reason to wait. A great start to the night.

Overall this was a terrific evening of wine, food, and friendship. It had been too long since e have gotten together, and this was a breath fo fresh air. It also is another testament to the greatness of the Produttori. Things may be changing in the future, but I cannot think of another producer of red wine anywhere that so consistently makes beautiful age worthy wines as such a value. It also confirmed my general love for Montefico as a terroir. We are very fortunate to have been able to make the severing happen. Thank you Tom and Henry.
