Introduction

An opportunity to try some Australian Shiraz

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2018 Logan Wines Shiraz Ridge of Tears Orange Vineyard

Australia, New South Wales, Central Ranges, Orange

Spiced, black pepper oddly a little dry ginger, blackberry - wet and fresh, with a smidge of blackcurrant, slightly jubey notes. Juicy, fleshy, peppery, blackberry fruit a little muted, grippy tannins are persistent and coarse flour textured. A little alcohol warmth on the finish. Okay.

  • 2019 Izway Shiraz Rob & Les

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Jubey blackberry, sweet spice, a little fruit tea; modern Barossa. Savoury, fruit a little short, a little alcohol warmth. Meh for me. In it's defence it's been open a day.

  • 2017 Tyrrell's Shiraz Single Vineyard Stevens

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Reductive with leather, plums, alcohol warmth and loads of peppery notes on the nose. Juicy, tangy, fruit a tiny bit sour, all flavours medium minus intensity, blackberry under plum, pepper. Medium minus intensity tannins are a little chalky. Hmm.

  • 2017 Paringa Estate Shiraz Estate

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula

Medium minus intensity aromas of peppery wild blackberry, earthy spices, a tiny sour snake, jubey elements. In the mouth it's juicy, fleshy, again a slightly sour note to the blackberry, touch of pepper, a bit belchy as well, chalky tannins. Meh.

  • 2017 Fighting Gully Road Shiraz

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Earthy, peppery, spicy over jubey black fruits, slight whole bunch (carbo crush). Juicy, tangy, black fruits, drying talc textured tannins, fruit just about persists, slight alcohol warmth on the finish. Okay.

  • 2016 Kilikanoon Shiraz Oracle

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Reductive, rubbery initially, alcohol warmth, ripe blackberry, plums, prunes almost, the oak is controlled. Juicy, concentrated, savoury black fruits, medium plus intensity drying chalky tannins, alcohol warmth, a little chocolate on the finish, very young. Time.

  • 2017 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Smells thick! Concentrated black fruits; berry, plums, prunes, slight raisins, baked fruits as well. Peppery spice, supported by alcohol. And it proves thick on the palate as well; massive chalky tannins, loads of alcohol warmth, concentrated fruit persists. Everything shouting and a bit disjointed at the mo'. Time may help. Close to unapproachable at the moment, for me.

  • 2017 Izway Shiraz Harold Liersch Vineyard

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

Slightly confected notes, initially, concentrated black fruits, a slight mint, eucalyptus element (or the alcohol) is lending a cool note. Juicy, savoury, that slight herbal mint/eucalyptus note is present here, fruit slightly muted, chalky tannins, slight alcohol warmth, fruit doesn't really persist. Hmm

  • 2005 Grant Burge Shiraz Meshach

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Rich, ripe blackberry, plum, chocolate, vanilla. Rich, juicy acidity, reasonably well balanced, alcohol warmth helps carry the fruit which proves dark hued. Long, tannins are silky and persistent. Old school and lovely.

  • 2020 Guroo Syrah Charlotte Dalton

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Kangaroo Island

    Served blind.
Whole bunch, wild ferment, ashy, black pepper, slightly medicinal, slight blackberry. Sourly juicy, chalky tannins, a little black pepper, muted fruit, slight alcohol warmth, whole bunch.
I guessed cool climate, shiraz, victoria 2015

  • 1973 Tyrrell's Shiraz Vat 9

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

    Served blind
Cellar stink, leather, slightly sour and dusty notes. Muted plums, cedar, cigar box. Juicy, softly earthy, leathery, wetly textured grip.
I guessed late 70's, early 80's Hunter Shiraz and, when pushed, went with Lindemans Hunter River Burgundy
