France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. From 3L. Black, red and blue fruit with lots going on. Still very firm on palate, especially its finish, cellar at lease a few more years.
Small glass, brief note. Second of two bottles tasted tonight. While fully mature, this bottle has so much going on - lingering black plum, black truffle, mushroom, smoked game and meaty spices. Very enjoyable.
Small glass, brief note. Still a behemoth, hinting at some of its underlying beauty. While not so easy to really enjoy right now, it is easy to see this will be a great wine in another decade. From 3L.
Small glass, brief note. I have had very mixed experiences with this wi e through the years, but tonight’s magnum was amongst the best. Lots of rich black fruit, lots of spice, lots of structure, with everything in proportion.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Lots here, certainly not shy. Intensely floral start. Very ripe and rich but with the sheer density to pull that off. Needs a few years for some new oak to fully absorb and to shed a bit of the baby fat. 93+ point potential.
Small glass, brief note. From 3L. Black and firm with meaty notes and lots of structure. Lots here, just not the most elegant vintage ever for Dominus.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Popped, decanted and poured. All black fruit with lots of meaty and savory spice character. Excellent density and balance through very long finish. Still incredibly fresh for a 2000. Possible further upside.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Riper than typical for Roulot, very concentrated, clearly Grand Cru density, but finishes somewhat compact, with moderate nuance yet. Upside?
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Magnum. I have mostly had good experiences with this wine, and tonight’s magnum was a particular standout. Absolutely intense concentration with so Much ripe apple and pear with some poached pear nuance, this was also firmly structured, so standing tall and demanding your attention. A great magnum.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Great concentration with near perfect balance. Sneaky length. A great wine, I might be underrating this wine tonight because it is on the subtle side.
Small glass, brief note. Ripe and fully mature, still holding fruit, spice and structure, nicely supplemented with earth and mushroom, wonderfully clean.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Small glass from magnum, brief note. Charming aromas of mature red fruit and spice, but much more tart and unforthcoming flavors. My friends tried to drink this pretty, but doubt they succeeded. Not sure what was wrong here.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass from magnum, brief note. A powerhouse with near perfect elegance and balance, and the minerality and weightless textures you can only find in great Chambolle.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. First time tasted since shortly after release, and it is more harmonious now, very well integrated, showing both ripe and tart nuance throughout. Very tasty.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Small glass from 3L, brief note. Gobs of very ripe black and blue fruit, with shockingly soft structure for Les Saint Georges. Bit warm on finish, but supported by brightening mineral textures.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Spices galore with such youthful, bright red fruit. Still lots of baby fat to shed, but so much great potential, 94-95 points. Thanks, Mike!
I have another 4 or 5 late night notes for which the wine name is illegible or I wrote nothing, and neither name nor note bring back any helpful memories.
