Marea - New York NY
Tasted Saturday, November 20, 2021 by Burgundy Al with 210 views
I separated the notes into three groups categories- (2) wines from one amazing table of new/ old friends, (1) everything else, then (3) a couple of wines après auction.
In 04/80/76 vertical. Wonderfully Vosne-styled spice with good weight, great length and supreme elegance. There is a subtle 2004 greenness that is impossible to ignore, but in this case it adds as much of an intriguing bitterness, rather than a sense of underripe fruit or pyrazines. Sneaky power on long finish.

In 04/80/76 vertical. Alluring nose shows rich red cherry and berry, sweet spice and black truffle. Similar flavors with equally alluring textures and a long finish, with a charming weightlessness carrying it into the sunset. Some tasters preferred this over the 1976, but the latter's density and heft gave it the nod from me.

In 04/80/76 vertical. Densely packed with intense power and concentration, in a manner that is rarely able to maintain this degree of impeccable balance. Ripe black and red cherry and berry with savory spice and faint meatiness. Some tasters preferred the 1980, but this wine's density and heft gave it the nod from me.

In 83/00/10 vertical, small tastes of each. All three were brilliant is such different ways that I could have agreed with any of the three as best or most enjoyable. 1983 from magnum, and my personal favorite. Dark color was a slight concern to start, but that quickly passed once smelled. Summer flowers with rich apricot and that faint background botrytis that makes great older white Burgundy so brilliant. Clearly ripe, but the structure is there, just off center, staying out of the limelight, but keeping this so bright. Brilliant.

In 83/00/10 vertical, small tastes of each. All three were brilliant is such different ways that I could have agreed with any of the three as best or most enjoyable. Incredibly fresh, even in my small glass I could feel this expanding towards a long, nearly explosive finish. Great fruit and great, even greater supporting structure.

In 83/00/10 vertical, small tastes of each. All three were brilliant is such different ways that I could have agreed with any of the three as best or most enjoyable. This was most likely the most complex of the three vintages tasted, with perfect combination of rich fruit, subtle spice and brilliant textures, but with just slightly less density vs the older vintages.

Small glass, brief note. Stone fruit and tropical hints with such unctuous textures and intense concentration, yet finishing with amazing brightening mineral textures. Another brilliant wine. Even better today vs last time tasted in 2015.

Small glass, brief note. So much here but also very reductive. Great potential, but when? This wine makes me sorry I'm so sensitive to reduction.

In 00/99/96 vertical, small tastes of each. Savory spice with ripe red and black cherry with just enough structure, perfectly off center in the immediate background, providing just perfect textures. Great weight and density. While I have only had the pleasure to taste Jayer's Cros Parantoux perhaps ten times, this 2000 is exactly like the other greats- it doesn't demand your attention, but you are unable to be distracted once you give it your attention.

In 00/99/96 vertical, small tastes of each. Wonderful aromas but somewhat flat on palate, ending in a somewhat tart finish. Nowhere near the level of a stunning bottle I previously had the thrill to taste. Most likely slightly flawed.

In 00/99/96 vertical, small tastes of each. Complex array of fresh and maturing red cherry and berry on nose and palate with more overt fruit and spice than the 2000, also greater concentration. Long, lingering finish, ending with a regal power. My Wine of the Day. Hmmm...maybe my Wine of the Year.

From magnum. Popped-and-poured, this kept opening and unfolding before our eyes. Brilliant richness and precision at the same time, with orchard fruit, mint, fresh herbs and faint tropical fruit hints all unfolding in wonderful combination and nuance. Wow!

1999 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. All red cherry and berry, still floral with earthy aromas. Good balance and length. Good enough weight.

2013 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Meaty, earthy nose with black fruit, still mostly fresh. Palate is more mature with some bitterness on finish. I would probably give this more time for that bitterness to (hopefully) fade or soften.

1989 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne Flawed
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Magnum. Ever so slightly corked, only discernible since it was already open 2 hours. So much great stuff here with great concentration.

1988 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Pèzerolles
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. A charming old Burgundy, Old School with more lingering structure than fruit, but still charming.

1996 Château Latour Grand Vin 95 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
From magnum. Double blind. Clearly left bank, I correctly thought Pauillac based on the lead pencil. Great density and balance. Long, seamless, so tasty

2002 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Charmes-Chambertin 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Charming and enjoyable Grand Cru, age appropriate nuance and maturation, with the right balance of freshness and evolution. My only real complaint I that there is little that says “Gevrey” vs any other appellation. But still, a very tasty and enjoyable mid-aged Burgundy.

1992 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Both very bright and very rich, this is Old School white Burgundy at its best with so much depth.

2001 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Amazingly elegant, this was tough to fully appreciate in the few minutes in glass. Bright red fruit with brilliant textures and great length, my few sips made me want more.

2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
Exactly the enticing spice you want/ expect from a great wine from Romanée-Conti, with so much depth of fresh and mature red fruits. Great now, with possible further upside.

1971 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. So easy to love if you love old Burgundy. Otherwise it just seems old. I adored its charm and complexity, even with its moderate weight.

1955 Patriarche Père et Fils Richebourg
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Dark color, good richness. Very enjoyable. A little bit of Grenache helps?

1973 Domaine Jaboulet-Vercherre Richebourg 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Lighter vintage, lighter style. Good spice, enough lingering fruit, just a bit too much assertive acidity, but so charming.

2008 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. So densely packed, so powerful, without quite seeming backward. A powerhouse in the making, this will be a great vintage but needed more air and/ ore rest in the cellar. Certainly 94-95 point potential.
