These milestone birthdays get less and less fun, but I guess it beats the alternative. We gathered with our daughter, son in law, and two dear friends for a relaxed evening on the patio on a a magical weather evening. The menu started with assorted cheeses and pate, and moved to Flannery Ribeyes with Chervil Bearnaise, Duck Fat Roasted Potatoes and Garlic, Rpasted Asparagus, Sautéed Shiitakes, and Green Salad from freshly harvested lettuces. We ended with a Sweet (not spiced) Carrot Cake, recipe courtesy of HRH’s grandmother.
Yum
2006 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut
France, Champagne
Big and ripe, with lots of toasty brioche, sweet lemon curd, and nice mineral cut. Even though it is youthfully flabby, and lacks the great undercurrent of Krug power, it is already quite good and should continue to improve.

1961 Franco Fiorina Barolo
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Meaty Umami aromas explode from the bottle upon opening. Even though this bottle is slightly maderized, it still shows some dark red fruit and wonderful depth and multi dimensional flavors of orange peel, leather, autumn leaves, and exotic spice.

1961 Château Lynch-Bages
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Saturated cork easily extracted with Durand. The nose is reticent at first bit evolves in the glass. Dark cassis and hints of red cherry dominate, with tertiary levels of black licorice, fresh green herbs, cinnamon, and tobacco, enveloped in powerful but balanced tannins. This wine still has quite a bit of life remaining.

2016 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos Red Label
Hungary, Tokaji
Even though this bottle is sufficiently sweet, and with enough acid to take on a sweet carrot cake, this baby needs lots of time to show its stuff. There are layers of honeyed nectarine and apricot, with beeswax and minerally freshness.

1961 Taylor (Fladgate) Very Old Single Harvest Port Limited Edition
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Alcohol dominates both the attack and the finish, but the mid palate shows layer after layer of orange, dried fig, light wild sage, caramel, coffee, and clove. Racy and vibrant, this could live forever.
