Introduction

I went to pick up my 2002 Radio Coteau shipment in person and was fortunate that Eric Sussman was willing to barrel sample his 2003 wines.

  • 2003 Radio-Coteau Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard

    USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

    Barrel Tasting: Very bright, cherry like fruit on entry. Some darker edges, maybe chocolate and cherry in the mid palette. Interesting now and should be even better when released next spring. Looking forward to now opening a 2002 I purchased today.

  • 2003 Radio-Coteau Pinot Noir Hellenthal

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Barrel Tasting: Very different that the Savoy bottling. Much darker up front than the Savoy, with less sweet cherry and more darker, sour fruit. Does not seem well integrated yet, but Eric Sussman said this has much higher acid than Savoy and it that will work itself out by next spring with more time in the barrel. Did not grab me immediately like the Savoy, but I am still quite interested in seeing where it is on release.

  • 2003 Radio-Coteau Syrah Timbervine

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Barrel Tasting: Strong, dark scents like leather with peppery overtones. Dark fruit but not a fruit bomb at all, this reminds me of a side of beef in a good way. Very much like the Porter Creek Syrah from the same vineyard that I have had in the past and liked a lot. Quite good.

  • 2003 Radio-Coteau Zinfandel Von Weidlich

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Barrel Tasting: WOW! Had this wine last and it left a truly great impression. Best integrated wine of those tasted. Wonderful nose with amazing, powerful fruit. Balanced with a long finish. I am hoping that the 2002 I purchased tastes this good. Will definitely buy this when released.

Closing

All in all excellent wines! The Savoy and Von Weidlich were the real winners in my opinion.
