Introduction

Lovely evening with new friends and some great wines. Can't remember the last time we did a big Bordeaux evening but these were all showing great (as you might imagine - '82 and '83 are some great years).

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1996 Pommery Champagne Cuvée Louise Brut

    France, Champagne

Another '96 champagne that is drinking super young. Hard to tell that there is any age here actually although it was poured from magnum. Good bubbles. Very crisp. That low dosage style. It's a nice champagne although I'd say in the more moderate category. Hoping it does add some heft with time, but we'll have to leave our other bottle to age I think.

  • 2018 Sine Qua Non Aperta

    USA, California, Central Coast

Been awhile since I've had one of these and maybe there was something about this year or maybe something about the age or I'm not sure what but this came across as being a lot more chardonnay than I remember and really kindof chard dominant. It's very round and full bodied. Vanilla and honey. Not totally my style, but it was fun to check in.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Pavie

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

This wine has a special place because it was one of the first 'real wines' that we just pulled out during COVID because daily drinkers work sometimes but sometimes it's nicer to drink better. And this is certainly many steps up from the daily drinker category. It's to me a truly lovely wine. Very bright. Red fruits. Granite. In a nice drinking window but not going anywhere anytime soon. I really appreciated it.

  • 1982 Château Figeac

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

First bottle was a bit off and that become every so much more apparent because the second bottle was truly rocking. Blackberry and freshness and almost a bit of that green/minty style of wine. Very pretty and bright and vibrant. Really enjoyed.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1983 Château Margaux

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

This is a wine that I was really excited to try esp given we've heard from a few folks claim it is one of the best Margaux years of all time and the '89 is prob one of our favorite wines ever. So I guess net-net is the expectations were very high and I'd say this was a good wine but not quite ready to live up to the very high expectations. It's quiet and it started to open up with some time in the glass and I had meant to go back but dinner went fast and our car showed up and I never quite made it back. Some liked it more than I and I certainly liked it, but would have liked to see it perform a bit better.

  • 1983 Château Palmer

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

This was lovely - darker fruits and big and vibrant and just drinking well. Had side by side with the Margaux and this to me was the winner this day. Just excellent.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Very much the austere style that Cos has a reputation for and honestly that I find myself being more drawn to with time. It's restrained, a bit less plushy (esp coming off of the Margaux) but also very well structured and in a nice drinking window.

  • 1982 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

In a very tough line-up and while I'd say this is a good wine I'm not sure it was quite where some of the others were. It's got darker fruit. A bit of funk. In a nice drinking spot.

Closing

Interestingly enough I found myself quite taken with the St Emillion flight although of course the Margaux ones are pretty top notch. Overall a fun evening with good company and good wine.
