Great Event. All new members (Jon R., Jon B., Tom H., Bruna, and me) in the NEW Twin Cities Wine Club which was the original great wine club in the Twin Cities back in 2005. We have a Pinot Event in February so message me if you are interested in joining the club. www.twincitieswinetasting.com.

Flight 1 - Cabs & Syrah (7 Notes)

Wine of the night by a landslide: Sorella 17 points
2nd Place: Sparkman 9 points
3rd Place: Cattle King 4 points
Other votes: K Ovide 2 points
L'Orage 2 points
Figgins 1 point

  • 2016 Sheridan Vineyard L'Orage 93 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

This was impressive. Funk and more funk over two glass on this night. Dark berries, minerals, tobacco and earth. Medium plus finish. Excellent wine. (Natural cork).

  • 2015 Figgins Estate Red Wine

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

Day 1: This is not showing well after a five plus hour decant. Not sure where this wine is going. I have half a bottle for day 2 and 3 which is good. I brought a back up bottle and glad I did. Spice, gritty earth quality and some fruit. Not showing much even after a five hour decant. (Natural cork)
Not going to score this at this time. While there are no noticeable flaws it does not seem to represent the wine. There is always the issue of poor storage (vertical storage in the shop with light on it all day).
    Gut impression of this bottle
Day 3: Still has a burnt edge quality. Not showing much fruit.
I had this wine on release a few years ago and gave it 94. This wine is not even close to that mark and the poor storage is the culprit. Returning the other 2 bottles.
    NO Score.

  • 2016 Andrew Will Sorella Champoux Vineyard 95 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills

Holly Sh..! Wine of the year candidate in January. High octane in a good way (Think Shafer Hillside). If this was Napa it would be $250. Blueberries, cherry, coffee beans, minerals and spices. Long finish and intense wine. Landslide wine of the night!
    4 hour decant! (Natural cork)

  • 2015 Sparkman Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Evermore 94 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Never had a Sparkman and it won't be my last. Impressive wine! Blackberries, black pepper, smoke minerals, pencil lead and raspberries. Intense wine but balanced. Excellent. (Diam 10)

  • 2014 K Vintners Ovide Jack's Vineyard 91 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

Classic K vintners with rock, floral, cherry, spices and earth. Amazing this is 80% Cabernet as it tasted more like Syrah. Needs a few more years in the cellar. (Natural cork)

  • 2018 Delmas Syrah SJR Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater

Young. Decanted 2 hours and probably could of used 5 plus. White pepper, mild funk, flowers, green olives and stone. I would advise holding these until 2026. (Natural cork)

  • 2013 K Vintners Syrah Cattle King Upland Vineyard 93 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley Snipes Mountain

Day 1: I brought this as a backup. My Figgins did not show well and this was a great plan B. Cherry, plum, black pepper, dark chocolate and spice. One of the most balance Syrah's from Washington I have had in a while. Should improve on day 2. (Natural cork) 93 points
Day 2: Not as impressive on day 2. Big style with some heat along with smoked meats, blackberries, spices, minerals, scorched earth and dust. Medium plus finish. Lacks acidity. 90 points

Closing

The Figgins was a huge disappointment while the nice surprise of the night was the Sheridan. I have had this wine before but never showing at this level. All wines will benefit with more age. February $50 plus Pinots from around the world.
