Introduction

We prepared samples for the group late morning, and conducted the tasting late afternoon. All samples were prepared straight from bottle, without additional aeration or decanting.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2015 Domaine de Boissan Côtes du Rhône Villages Sablet Blanc 88 Points

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Sablet

Wine 1 of 8. Medium yelllow gold. Somewhat restrained exotic fruit, stone fruit, apricot and light anise, with medium-level acidity, an oily texture and good length. Medium to full, with lightly warming alcohol and pleasant light bitterness.

More open and accessible and more mineral but also more alcoholic on day two. Might pair well with a light yellow curry. I would hold for another year or two, or aerate in advance. 88(?)

  • 2007 Domaine Betton Crozes-Hermitage 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

Wine 2 of 8. Red and some dark fruit, complex spice note, toast, and a hint of mint, with good acidity, ripe, round tannin, and good length. Lightly mineral. Medium-bodied, smoothly textured and well-balanced.

Darker, lightly herbal and lightly gamy on day two, and still mineral and smooth. A good, very drinkable Syrah.

  • 2007 Domaine Durand Cornas Empreintes 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Wine 3 of 8. Medium to dark ruby colour. Sweet, ripe red fruit, light cedar, light leather, light tobacco, some liquorice, light vanilla, and light minerality, with good acidity, medium ripe tannin, and good length. The oak is much better integrated than five years ago.

That said, the wine was less harmonious and less complete on day two, and I liked it better on day one. Drink over the medium term.

  • 2003 Domaine La Genestière Lirac Cuvée Eliott 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac

Wine 4 of 8. Red and some dark fruit, spices, and a marzipan-like note, with good acidity and good length. The tannin is still present. Some rough edges, but they add character. That said, by day two the finish was drying and the alcohol lightly warming, and I am not convinced that the fruit will outlive the tannin. Drink now. 88(-)

  • 2009 Château Redortier Beaumes-de-Venise Monsieur le Comte 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Beaumes-de-Venise

Wine 5 of 8. Stinky, reductive nose. Red fruit and some dark fruit, light chocolate, garrigue, and spices, with medium-level acidity, partly resolved tannin, and good length. Good structure and concentration.

By day two, the stinky reduction blew off and the tannin became rounder. Good. Should benefit from another five years in the cellar.

  • 2012 Domaine de Boissan Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Wine 6 of 8. Ripe red fruit, light herbal notes, and spices, with medium-level acidity, medium-fine, lightly dry tannin and good length.

Smooth and harmonious, if still tannic and very slightly porty on day two.

  • 2012 Château Mourgues du Gres Costières-de-Nîmes Terre de Feu 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Costières-de-Nîmes

Wine 7 of 8. Red fruit, herbs, spices, marzipan, and gravelly minerality, with good, medium-level acidity, fine-grained, partly resolved tannin and very good length. Well-Structured, and well-balanced.

Consistent and even more harmonious and enjoyable on day two. The good structure suggest that this wine has upside potential.

  • 2010 Mas du Soleilla Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape Clôt de l'Amandier 92 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape

Wine 8 of 8. Ripe red and black fruit, black tea leaf, garrigue, and spices, with ripe tannin, just enough acidity, and superb length. Good concentration and complexity. Contains the high alcohol very well. Drinking at its peak already.

Some very good values. The Château Mourgues du Gres Costières-de-Nîmes Terre de Feu 2012 stood out for its great structure and good balance, and the Clôt de l'Amandier 2010 for its power and concentration.
