Introduction

I had a few friends over for dinner and a line up of Châteauneufs.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2004 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Black color with a purple rim. Black currant, black berry, licorise and a bit of herbs on the somewhat closed nose, also a bit of marzipan after some time in the glass. It is also holding back on the palate, but showing some raspberry, blackberry, licorise and hints of pepper. On the finish it has some cherry liqueur and raisin. Great length and balance, but it is closed down right now, and needs cellaring.

  • 2001 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Félix 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color with a brick red to orange hue. Farmyard, earthy nose with many nuances such as raspberry, black currant, raisin and horse. Similarly nuanced on the palate with raspberry, pepper and farmyard, and becoming even more rustic on the midpalate with leather and cigar. Even more complexity on the finish, where notes of spices, pepper, and dried fruit, raisin, lingers on the very long finish. Amazing balance, leaves a very nice and elegant impression, but still very youthfull with powerful tannins. This is great now but will gain from more cellaring.

  • 1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color that is starting to show brownish nuances on the rim. Amazingly complex nose, with notes of sherry, a lot of raisin, raspberry, a sweet cocktail berry, cranberry, viols, buttered milk and hints of mushrooms. On the palate it has red berries first, together with leather, horse and tobaco. More dried fruit on the finish, raisins and dried cranberries. Still showing some well integrated tannins, and promising well for many more years to come. Very beautiful and developing so much in the glass.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 1998 Alois Kracher Welschriesling TBA #11 Zwischen den Seen 97 Points

    Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee

Golden brown to dark amber color. Exotic nose with mango, lychee and very ripe pineapple, some gasoline and spiced botrytis notes, super intense - it jumps out of the bottle and literally fills the room. Huge concentration, almost like drinking sirup, and the fruit is enormous, with many exotic notes, lychee, mango, pineapple and pear. On the finish it has wine gum, brown sugar and raisin. The taste lingers for minuttes. Very sweet, but there is a powerful acidity that cuts through and restrains the volume, making the overall impression very elegant. Amazing wine.
