Introduction

Even if this was our first visit to a new restaurant, we had pretty high expectations. Great reviews online and an acclaimed legacy.

Flight 1 - Food and plesures! (8 Notes)

The plentiful dishes were all sensitive, very French and served in good tempo. Fantastic delivery by one person (chef, garçon, dishwasher, sommelier, entertainer, etc) with four couples as guests.

We left the restaurant completely stunned!

We're returning as often as we can AND a large portion of the future tastings where I’m involved, will be in this fantastic establishment.

  • 2017 Lucien Crochet Sancerre Le Chêne Marchand 95 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

For my feeling of this wine, it's definitely 100 points.
    Right up my alley.

The perfect expression of Sb with ample sunshine and not very hot weather, aromatic, but not OTT. Freshly cut grass, gooseberry, kiwi, citrus armada and everything v-i-b-r-r-r-a-n-t. The minerality is amazing and shines through the beautifully transparent architecture.

Got a tiny glass of this at fabulous French restaurant ETE in Kamakura, but from my love of this wine, the proprietor offered me the bottle 8-)

I'm now finding myself a stash of this and it will live long and prosper for at least 10 more years. Mind boggling!

  • 2020 Bodegas Rafael Palacios Godello Valdeorras Louro do Bolo 77 Points

    Spain, Galicia, Valdeorras

Nothing wrong with this wine, but not in the least bit exciting. Faceless with low acidity, short and from a warm place (not too well managed).

    Only wine tonight that wasn't a turn-on.

  • 2018 Domaine Cornu-Camus Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Charnières 82 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

From my personal tadte horizon, this hardly even scores 60. Thin, short, non elevé, no tannins… I try to give an objective score of the wine's quality. (I'm not a burghead.)

However, it does have a bit of a beutiful aromatic prophile (not the typical "purple" PN characteristic) and good acidity keeping this wine in good balance.

It did well with the food, as in flaccidly holding its hand. Not as in enhancing nor leading its way.

  • 2020 Louis Metaireau Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine One 88 Points

France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine

On my palate, this lands as a pleasure bomb around 98 points. Actually tried to snatch the btl from the chef :-)

This is an insanely beautiful M de S&M sur lie.

Acidity is perfect, as is the architecture, opening up for the stunning minerals on display here. Anything seafood with this is mariage.

People with less affinity towards Melon de Bourgogne may find a reason to complain with this wine's lack of omph. Not a heavy hitter, but one with precision and nerve.

    Absolutely lovely!

    Mjuff!!!

Will definitely benefit from some age and become a yellow Muscadet around age 7-9. Wish it was now!

  • 2020 Domaine Cordier Père et Fils Pouilly-Fuissé 80 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé

Non-oaked, non-élevé and faceless with low acidity and that irritating 'modern' Chardonnay quality of **ripe fruit Chard** that I'm not a huge fan of.

Short, faceless and far from carrying typicity nor any kind of gravitas.

I'm not even sure I'd be able to pick this as a Chardonnay in a blind tasting…

  • 2019 Pierre Amadieu Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane 86 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

At this pricepoint, this is a crazy bargain!
A far cry from the better Gigondas wines or GSM's for that matter. But this is pleasing and lies well in the mouth as you chew away on a nice steak.

…it's up to your wallet if you want to upgrade to a mature Hermitage instead ;-)

  • 2018 Château Samion Lalande de Pomerol 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lalande de Pomerol

This is a tad simple, but with a wonderful structure made for meat.:
Tangible acidity, coarse and fine grained tannins and rich enough expression of the grapes to be a pleasure at any table.

Will live long and surely evolve into something even nicer!

A fantastic Lalande de Pomerol, an appellation I should dive deeper into…

  • 2016 Domaine de la Bergerie Coteaux du Layon Rablay Clos de la Girardiére 94 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon Rablay

Too young to merit a higher score, but this is an amaaaazing wine!

Aristocratically sweet, with perfecly matching acidity, intensity and omph to sustain the pleasures of this wine for many years to come. Amazing aromatic prophile today of the classic yellow fruits, a bit of wax, honey AND a truckload of mangoes with a bit of vanilla icecream.

This is one of the youngest CdL I ever enjoyed and this will live very long as a stunning stunner. I'll be long gone before this wine is.

    Lovely! Mjuff!

Closing

We left the restaurant VERY happy and will return as often as possible. Highly recommended whenever you're in Kamakura (50 min from Tokyo by train.)
