Introduction

This was a nice dinner at Lampreia to welcome back the in-laws.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

With seared Hamachi filet and many flavors, this wine was a lovely match. The next course was a fantastic one of fresh fava beans, covered in paper thin sheets of Pecorino and then drizzled with white truffle oil.

  • 2001 Alzinger Riesling Smaragd Loibenberg 92 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Purchased from the list at Lampreia. When first opened this was quite reticent. However, after 15 minutes the bose simply explodes with honey, hints of smokey mineral, canned peaches, and very ripe melon. In parallel with the nose, the palate just showed minerals at first with clear body. However, with air the oily and intense palate explodes, showing salty minerals, and sweet, ripe, honeyed fruit. The finish is long, salty and lightly bitter on the finish. Fantastic showing. This has opened up considerably in the last year.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

With a main course of rare lamb loin this wine was right at home, and it also matched nicely with baked Pecorino.

  • 1989 Château La Fleur de Gay 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

This was a late selection for a surprise dinner out, so I didn't have time to stand it up. I elected to double-decant at home for sediment. In hindsight, I probably would not decant this wine. It didn't fade on the palate, but I suspect that a lot of the best aromatics were lost. The fill was very nice on this, and the cork was utterly perfect, just a dark dime of color on the bottom without the faintest bit of wine up the edge of the cork. When we poured the wine at the restaurant, the nose showed smoky teriyaki sauce, soy, and black fruit. On the palate this was a bit acidic at first, but it opened quickly to show a very ripe, sweet, and sultry personality. This was certainly gorgeous, sweet, and a very nice Pomerol. However, compared to a 1990 enjoyed a year ago this was a pale shadow.
