I've had several pre-1996 vintage Champagnes that I've enjoyed, but I've felt they all were on the tired side. That was not the case with the Pol Roger. My first thought was how perfectly aged this wine was. It was intense and structured. Lots of yeasty bread dough, graham cracker and ripe, sweet apples. This feels like it's at its peak now.
Intense, beautiful aromatics of lilac flowers, currants and barnyard. This was tight and needed more time to open up. I found it rather thin on the mid-palate and never really came around. I was disappointed.
Huge nose of deep, jammy, dark fruits, licorice and cassis. Mouthstaining with tremendous depth and intensity. It continued to evolve and got better, but was accessible from the first glass after a 30 minute decant.
I was blown away by this. The nose reminded me of fresh cedar sawdust. Extremely complex - espresso, cedar, extra dark chocolate, crushed rocks and dark fruit. Tremendous mouthfeel that tattoos the mouth. And as you would expect, the finish sails on forever. A big thanks to Dionysis for contributing this. WOTN.
Petrol, orange marmalade, and spot-on honey dew melon. This wine felt heavy on the palate, but the acidity on the finish some how kept it from being cloying.
