Introduction

6 or 7 wines and lots of enthusiasm. All tasted blind

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2019 Mullineux Chenin Blanc Kloof Street Old Vine

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland

    A: Pale lemon
N: medium + nose of Apple, pear, lemon, peach, honeysuckle, vanilla,(might have been wet wool) nuts, smoke, wet rock
P: Dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium (+) body, medium (+) intensity for Apple, pear, lemon, peach, honeysuckle, vanilla,(might have been wet wool) nuts, smoke, wet rock and medium maybe med + finish
C: balanced , length, intensity. Very good quality wine which is suitable for ageing (fruit concentration and acidity to preserve freshness)

    Guess:
Chablis or further south in burgundy.

    Mistakes:
I got no real read on wet wool and the shape of the acidity evaded ne

Old Vine Chenin Blanc, KLoof Street , Swartland, 2019 13% alcohol

  • 2018 Grgich Hills Sauvignon Blanc Fumé Blanc

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    A: Pale lemon (with lustre)
N: Medium (+) nose of radish, arugula, apple, lime rind, white peach, grapefruit rind, wet stone
P: Dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, pb, pronounced intensity, medium (+) body and long finish
Balanced fruit and acidity, length and intensity are ideal and complexity here. well defined fruit profile. Outstanding quality

    Guess:
Gruner Veltliner. Kremstal. It was vegetal and had more body than I expected yet the fruit was not very ripe.

    Mistakes:
The richer mouthfeel was related to time spent in barrel rather than the warmer climate of Kremstal. I missed all other clues to barrel ageing and the fruit was likely riper than I thought. Also no white pepper which might have lead me away from Gruner (though I rarely get it on Gruner). I should have locked on to the absence of phenolic bitterness, that would certainly have moved me towards the other very vegetal white grape, SB.

  • 2020 Mullineux Chenin Blanc Kloof Street Old Vine

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland

    Tasted Blind

    A: Pale lemon
N: Medium nose of candied lime, apple, white peach, melon rind, grass..no hay, wet rock
P: Dry, medium (+) acidity, med alcohol, medium (+) intensity, medium body, medium (+) finish
Fruit is well defined but not complex. Length and intensity are good and some balance between the acidity and the fruit concentration.
Old Vine Chenin Blanc, Kloof Street, 2020 13% alcohol

    Guess:
I thought it might be Gruner Veltliner from the Wachau but then thought the grass was hay and chamomile. The acidity seemed to crescendo a bit and so guessed a SA CB in the end

  • 2016 Château Kirwan

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Tasted Blind

    A: Deep ruby
N: Pronounced nose of blackcurrants, capsicum, dark plum, dark dried cherry, violets, tobacco, chocolate, coffee, baking spice, leather,
P:Dry, medium (+) acid, medium alcoho (13.5%)l, full body, pronounced intensity, high chalky tannin, medium (+) finish
Great typcicity and great everything else, Outstanding quality.

    Guess:
Earthy but well developed black fruit including a lot of cassis coupled with that body and tannin and I knew it was a Cab Sav dominant blend. I guessed it was a Left Bank Bordeaux from the Medoc given the earthiness.

  • 2016 Louis Clerc Côte-Rôtie

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    Tasted Blind

    A: Pale ruby
N: Pronounced nose of cherry, strawberry BURIED under smoke, charred wood, black and white pepper, nutmeg/cinammon ,medicinal
P: Dry, medium (+) acidy, medium (+) fine grained tannin, medium (13%) but looking at the glass it is quite viscous, pronounced intensity and medium (+) finish
    Suitable for Ageing: yes
BLIC balance acid to tannin, good length an intensity . Very good quality

    Guess:
Rotundone grape that is pale? Grenache.

    Mistakes:
That smoke was not indicative of Grenache. I put too much value on the intensity of the color. I should have gone to Syrah and with the medicinal barnyard element, I would have located it in the old world and the northern rhone.Cote Rotie is quite far north in the Rhone and so may account for the color intensity, Look forward to trying more of these.
Cote Roti - 100% Syrah 13% abv. No Viognier in this so the palor and florals are from Syrah

  • 2016 Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet (Hervé Souhaut) St. Joseph Clos des Cessieux

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

    Tasting Blind

A: Medium (others said deep) purple
N: Pronounced nose of iodine , sun dried cherry, tomatoes, stewed plums, cloves, black tea, dried lavender, pencil shavings and some stems
P: Dry, high acidity, medium (+) chalky tannin, medium alcohol, medium body, pronounced intensity and medium (+) finish

This is a very good quality wine. Not complex but there is enough of everything else to add to its quality

    Guess:
The ripe fruit and barnyard/iodine flavors put me in a warmer climate in the old world. I thought it likely Syrah though spotted no black pepper.
