Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2019 Château Smith Haut Lafitte 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (6/28/2022)

93-94. Rounding up, but let's see with time. More rounded red than the other Pessacs and a kiss of vanilla, but still nicely structured with drying tannin. Had a subtle note of complexity that I couldn't quite place, but yet I associate with the estate the few times I have had it. Animal/coffee note? But this 2019 was overall very pure. Happy to own a couple bottles of this, think geeks and crowds will both enjoy it in youth and age - but not convinced to run out and buy another case versus other wines tried today.

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Want to re-taste this wine. Good transparent red fruit with density, good balance, nothing out of place. Not owning the wine, I bought some after this quick taste. 92-94.

  • 2019 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

91-92. A steal at the $25 EP price. To those who brought mags at EP, congrats. To drink in ?10 years?

  • 2019 Château Léoville Poyferré 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    (6/28/2022)

Thought this was 'lovely'. Good plump red fruit and good lift. A bit simple today compared to other wines tried thus far, but very balanced and quaffable. 92-93. May have underscored at 92.

  • 2019 Château Léoville Barton 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    (6/28/2022)

This may be one of the better QPRs of the vintage, still available for GBP$60 in the UK. 93 with upside.

Flight 3 (4 Notes)

  • 2019 Château Canon 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    (6/28/2022)

A good showing, but not the right environment to assess. Nose had flowers, ripe red/dark purple fruit, and spice. On the palate this was plump fruit with a creamy mouthfeel. Some sense of graphite or crushed rock? Very fresh finish. Maybe the freshness led itself to being perceived as feeling some alcohol on the finish? Left with impression this will be a great wine, but wondering about that slight overly fresh finish

  • 2019 Château Valandraud

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    (6/28/2022)

I am confused by the high scores of this wine. This wine was over the top 15.5% alc with bigness and ripeness and needed to be served cooler than other wines to hide it. Great polished mouthfeel, but a big wine without hiding the 15%+. Personally for this style, I would would go for the 2019 Troplong Mondot which was rich and big (14.5%) but not this big.

  • 2019 Château La Tour Figeac 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    (6/28/2022)

    91. I found this to be a unique wine, and more unique than the other TN here. Red fruit with a kiss of vanilla and cigar spice. The fruit here felt lighter/pure/translucent, but layered with welcome complexity from that cigar spice. I can see people calling this wine "power without weight" in other regions. Clocks in at 14.5%, a little too powerful, and a tinge too much sweetness. Compelling QPR for the $35 I see it in Europe. If it was 14% or 13.x%, I think this wine would get a lot of buzz for the price.

  • 2019 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    (6/28/2022)

A bigger and riper wine that shows its 14.5%. Mix of a Napa with Bordeaux complexity. Better value than most equivalently priced Napa given the wine is well made with complexity today (and will grow in time). But ultimately, not my kind of 2019.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2019 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    (6/28/2022)

A master class of finesse with nothing out of place. Not hedonistic. Not dilute. Everything perfectly proportioned. Seamless in the mouth, the way your brain is confused by the seamlessness, all the way down into your belly. If a Paulliac was dressed up in a pretty black dress, this would be it. Estate believes this wine will be famous like the 1982 and that the 2020 is nearly as good. 96-97. A wine that forces me to decompress my scores a little bit and show a little distance to the other Paulliac...

  • 2019 Château Lynch-Bages 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    (6/28/2022)

Estate representative said this wine's historical reference point would be the 1990 (but need to wait and see in 20 years). An excellent vintage and I am sad I did not buy enough/buy mags.

  • 2019 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    (6/28/2022)

Others at the tasting enjoyed this more than me, putting this above the Lynch Bages. This felt less seamless to me than the Lynch Bages and the PLL tasted alongside it, but this had more power and interest at this young age.
