Introduction

Trying 6 Condrieu from top producers, all from 2020

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2020 Domaine Georges Vernay Condrieu Les Terrasses de l'Empire

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

The domaine’s principle Condrieu in volume terms, this comes from 45 yo vines in Sainte Agathe and La Caille climats. The grapes are hand-harvested at full maturity, pressed and fermented in 20hl wooden vats. The wine remains on its lees for another 8 months with occasional stirring.
    -//-
The wine shows freshness, extrovert, overripe mango, quince, apricot, medium intensity, shows density and depth, floral notes with perhaps some lees notes
In palate, the wine shows medium intensity, energy, minerality, warmth from 14% alcohol, glycerin, more herbal and floral than fruity compared to nose. Rather green at this point, the fruit is underripe in palate, apricot and pear, a few tropical notes, medium body, medium acidity, long finish.

  • 2020 Clusel-Roch Condrieu Verchery

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

The vineyards are situated in Vernon and Chery, a total of 0.5 hectares, the vines are 30yo. Plant density is 8,000 vines/ha. The majority of fermentation takes place in barrels and a small in stainless steel tanks, always with natural yeasts. The malolactic fermentation takes place afterwards. Ageing for 1 year in barrels of stainless steel tanks. Fined and lightly filtered before bottling. Annual production 2,000 bottles.
    -//-
The wine shows very light character, pear and green apple next to apricot, less floral but more herbal than Vernay tasted before.
In the palate, the wine shows a more shy profile too, almost watered down compared to Vernay, the alcohol is considerably less (12.50%), elegant, a touch green fruit again, steely, mineral, long finish
Shows less impact on the palate, feels more airy/elegant, more green herbal than fruit, but it might as well have closed down

    -//-
Higher intensity in the nose, more vanilla, ripe fruit, green apple, peach and apricot, a beautiful green fruit layer, everything in balance, a few crushed raw almond and hazelnut.
In the palate, the wine follows the same profile, beautifully balanced, steely mineral, full body, fresh fruit, tropical hints, also apricot, pear, melon, warmth from 14.50%, long finish.
Very young to enjoy now, outstanding quality, truly elegant

  • 2020 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

The grapes come from the top terroirs of Condrieu, vineyards on very steep terraces. 1ha Côte Chatillon, Condrieu (shale, limestone),
1ha Colombier, St Michel Sur Rhône (granite, sand)
1ha Volan St Pierre de Boeuf (granite with iron oxide)
    0,5ha Coteau de Chéry, Condrieu
The average age of vines is 35 years, yielding 39hl/ha. The wine is made exclusively in new oak for 12 months and then goes into malolactic fermentation. The wine then ages in new oak. The average annual production is 20,000 bottles.
    -//-
The wine shows high intensity, heavily based in oak treatment, new oak notes, walnut, vanilla even caramel, brioche, the fruit is on the ripe to overripe side, apricot, melon, quince, sweet spices.
In the palate, the wine shows full body, like Cuilleron’s les Chaillets tasted before, this is lighter in the palate, the high alcohol (14.50%) adds sweetness and warmth, almond, walnut, overripe fruit, peach, melon, vanilla and long finish
This will require time to absorb everything and find balance, highly extrovert and to easy to impress. But elegant? nope
