Ordered because we saw it was a Chapoutier - interesting to see. Lovely savoury white-bread body, grilled hazelnuts. No real sweetness as such. Slightly chewy texture, aged.
Ordered for old-times’ sake - it’s about 10 years since we last had this (bought in Barcelona for a stag do). Bright sweet fruit, fragrant and spiced, lovely supply body, some gentle funk on the nose (enough for interest without being offputting). Very good and would seek out.
Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali
We asked the somm for a recommendation that was stylistically similar to the Planetes de Nin 2018 we’d had with he food. This had an engaging and enticing nose, a touch more initial funk or earthiness, charming fruit (strawberries, sweet cherry, red/black berries more generally), herbs. Thicker in texture than I was expecting but fulfilled the brief given to the somm and was very enjoyable without food.
Don’t drink enough port to have much of a comparison, but blackcurrants, fig, vanilla. Xavier calls it ‘deep; powerful, sweet’ and that’s right, some spice, good energy to balance that body and depth, and good length.
