Introduction

A random selection of 95 and 05 Bordeauxs to look at...

Flight 1 - 1995 (2 Notes)

The Le Crock was brashly bold but enjoyable. the d'Armailhac quite reticent.

  • 1995 Château Le Crock

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

From Coravin. Slight liquorice, blackcurrant, a little wet earth, peppery prickle, leather, oaky underpin lends sweet spice and cedar…nice nose but on the bold side. Plenty of juicy dark hued fruit backed by sweet spice is married to plenty of drying tannins that are quite woody and coarse. Rustically bold and lovely. Yum

  • 1995 Château d'Armailhac

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of slight pyrazine, wet clay, earthy, a little muted blackcurrant with a cassis underpin, a little cigar box, slightly leathery notes. Juicy red over black fruits, slightly chalky textured tannins, a little sourness on the finish, quite simple, possibly a little tired. A good decant may help this open up.

Flight 2 - 2005 (5 Notes)

I do love a selection of (relatively) cheap Bordeaux's from a reasonable vintage. These were all nice.

  • 2005 Château Mazeyres

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

From Coravin. Ripe plums, plenty of sweet spice, a little cedar and a smidge of toast, and pencil shavings. Juicy, talc textured tannins more red than black fruits but fruit sweet and clean. Non intrusive alcohol warmth. Nice.

  • 2005 Château Beaumont

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin. Cream, sweet plums over savoury blackcurrant, touch of caramel; polished oak, sweet spice, with a smidge of mocha, a little raspberry note with time. Juicy, creamy, talc textured tannins have a slightly chalky butt, again sweet plum over savoury blackcurrant, non intrusive alcohol warmth . Quite complete for such a relatively entry level wine.

  • 2005 Château Petit Bocq

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

From Coravin. Crushed rock, black hued fruits, blackcurrant, cedar, a little plum, leather and yeast extract. Savoury, dark hued fruit and rocky minerality, tight chewy grape and wood tannins lends a little astringency but I find this quite compelling…Like the Le Crock there is a little rusticity but not an issue for me.

  • 2005 Château Maucamps

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas show as quite closed, beefy notes, quite savoury, muted black hued fruits, earth, leather. Medium plus intensity acidity grippy tannins fruit lozenges with a savoury underpin, all in balance. The palate shows and offers far more than the nose. Yum.

  • 2005 Château Marquis d'Alesme

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Slight cream, blackcurrant, pyrazine, savoury spice, cedar, earthy notes, chalky minerality, a little red currant underpin with time. Savoury, meaty underpin, red and black fruits, chalky chewy tannins, earthy, leathery notes. Non intrusive alcohol warmth but this is the best this wine has shown for me.
