Introduction

Caught up with the Wine-Ark boys for Christmas lunch...theme was mostly old shit (pre 2000) with a single ring in

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 1997 Tyrrell's Chardonnay Vat 47

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Honey, lemon, slight butter and an impression of sharpness on the nose. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, butter, lemon, slight bruised apple, still fresh, long, rather lovely and a pleasing surprise.

  • 2018 Tissot (Bénédicte et Stéphane / André et Mireille) Traminer Arbois

Wood glue, almond, bruised apple, butter, slight citrus. Medium plus intensity acidity, palate a reflection of the nose, tangy, fresh, okay.

  • 1983 Château Bastor-Lamontagne

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Apricot, orange marmalade made with brown sugar, a little vanilla, toffee, honey. In the mouth it's juicy, a little simpler than the nose implies with a touch more toffee tending to caramel…perfectly pleasant though.

  • 1982 Château du Tertre

  • 1990 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Medium minus intensity aromas prove savoury, eucalyptus, earth, crisp blackcurrant to the fore, slight leather and non-intrusive alcohol warmth. Medium plus intensity acidity tending to sour, juicy, blackcurrant, tight grippy quite woody tannins show a little cedar, slight alcohol warmth on the finish.

  • 1998 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri

    Australia, South Australia

Oof, after the previous wines this shows very young, blackberry, sweet spice, even with a decant it proves slightly reductive, touch of mint and eucalyptus. Juicy, concentrated black fruit, a little reductive again, tight woody tannins are slightly chalky, again a little herbaceous and a touch of red currant underpin. Okay.

  • 1998 Seppelt Shiraz Chalambar

    Australia, Victoria

Black fruits are slightly baked, a little on the concentrated side, sweet oak spice, a little reductive note lends a rubbery and almost resinous underpin, touch of leather. Juicy, fleshy, dark hued fruit, slightly rubbery notes, tannins are drying but quite talc textured, handles its alcohol well.
