Introduction

Had Scott, his new girlfriend and a few other folks for a full-on dinner party at Chez Hughes. Scott has entertained us several times so we wanted to return the favor. Pulled together a really nice lineup of food and wine and I think everyone had a great time. Everyone was still going strong at about 1:30am if that's any indication! All the wines from my cellar this time.

Flight 1 - With salmon and dill cream cheese and tellagio and with carmelized onion crostini canapes (1 Note)

Flight 2 - With goat cheese and herb souffles (1 Note)

  • 2004 Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang 93 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

Another wondeful wine from Dagueneau. These are getting really expensive these days, but this certainly had the most gravitas of most any Sauvignon blanc you can think of. Good mineral, prickly spice, and sound acidity. Great with the food.

Flight 3 - With salad lyonaise over crispy potatoes and with sauteed Dover sole in a soy brown butter sauce (2 Notes)

Flight 4 - With wild mushroom soup over sauteed morells (2 Notes)

  • 1994 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Not as good as my last bottle. This was a nice burgundy with good character and decent fruit, but certainly not up to expectations for such as august wine. Full crimson red color. Nice nose of brown sugar and red cherry with just a hint of the asian spices. A bit pale on the palate but actually picked up some weight with time in the glass. Some nice secondary character here as well.

  • 1976 Maison Leroy Romanée St. Vivant 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Full garnet color. Medium pale nose of red cherry and dusty briar - nice but not the beguiling nose you see on great Leroys. Decent fruit with a hint of sour on the palate.

Flight 5 - With Flannery NY Strips over potato parsnip puree and oregano oil with a marrow sauce and onion rings (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Mouton Rothschild 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Decanted 4 hours, served blind. Full red color. Lovely nose of black fruit, earth, and coffee notes. Nice round red fruit with good structure, but drinking reasonably well. Ripe for bordeaux, but certainly not over the top.

  • 2003 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select 95 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Decanted 4 hours, served blind. Full opaque black purple color. Huge nose of tight coffee and sweet black fruit. Huge black chocolate fruit on the palate. Lovely - easily the best 03 Cali cab I've had and substantially better than the taste from a year ago (decanting may have helped quite a bit here).

Flight 6 - With the cheese course (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Full bright red color. Incredible black pepper, saddle leather, and bacon fat nose. Big ripe red fruit with lovely spiciness. Just love this wine and it's showing as well as ever!

  • 1996 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Full round red color. Spactacular nose of black briar and pepper. A bit lighter bodied and some red fruit character on the palate. Certainly not a monumental La La, but a lovely wine nonetheless... 94-95 pts.
