Introduction

A little taste of the few beloved Viettis I have in the cellar

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2015 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza La Crena

Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza

From Coravin. Sweet spice, a little caramel and cedar, ripe cherry, cream, quite a 'worked' nose for me. Juicy acidity, woody tannins are chewy, slightly drying but under the sweet spice and cherry flavours. A touch of alcohol warmth intrudes slightly on the finish though other than that this is a well balanced wine and perfectly pleasant.

  • 2012 Vietti Barbaresco Masseria

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of plums tends to umeboshi, dry earth, a touch of meaty underpin, some herbaceous almost green stalk notes. Hmm. That green stalk note translate to the palate joining the plummy fruit, tannins are drying and a little cumbersome, touch of beef stock and yeast extract, lacks balance, showing a touch disjointed. Hmm.

  • 2011 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Savoury, spicy, dried flowers, meaty underpin, a little plum and cherry, touch of almost clove and biscuit. With time the fruit takes precedence. Medium plus intensity acidity, fruit more savoury on the palate. An iron/blood note also present. Tannins are drying, persistent but more in support. Lovely.

  • 2012 Vietti Barolo Brunate

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas show a touch of almost tomato leaf, slight savoury spice, a little meaty/savoury note, with time a smidge of sweet plum, dried orange peel and some blood notes. Medium plus intensity acidity is juicy, it's quite savoury, meaty in the mouth, tannins cling to the gums and palate, there is a little hardness here as well. Time for me.

  • 2015 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. A little cherry, plum, sweet spice, pot pourri notes, grow with time and a certain earthy minerality, pretty nose. Wetly juicy with medium plus intensity acidity, tight, slightly coarse (though not rustic) tannic rasp supports the fruit flavours (and some more oaky notes) on the long finish. Alcohol is well managed. Nice.

Closing

Unsurprisingly the general sense was of time required but the Lazzarito was very nice.
