France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Youngest looking in a blind flight of 4 top 2007 Ramonet wines, with a green tint. Chalky mineral finish. This and what turned out to be Batard were the group favorites. Excellent indeed, but from this blind tasting Batard is the smarter buy for current drinking, and the Montrachet will probably be the better wine in another 5-10 years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Most opulent aromas of 4 wines served in a blind flight of 2007 Ramonet. While very good, the Batard and Montrachet were a step up as all tasters agreed before the wines were revealed. I miss the days of buying Ruchottes at "house wine" prices, and a tasting like today makes one question the value proposition at today's market pricing.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Served blind in a flight of 4 2007 Ramonet wines, this had the longest finish -- even longer than what turned out to be the Montrachet. It did also have a bit more bitterness on the finish than the Montrachet. I think this has room to improve, and hopefully will do so without becoming oxidized. I would buy this over the Montrachet for current drinking, given how close in quality they were in the blind tasting, and expect the Montrachet to be the better wine in 5-10 years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Youngest most reserved of the 3 wines in this blind flight, vs CSD and Bonnes Mares. Extremely clean and polished by comparison to the other two wines.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
Funky nose and stewed fruit made this the weakest in a blind flight against 99 CDLR and 98 Bonnes Mares. The palate was full of pretty fruit, though, so all was not lost. And to my surprise the aroma came around after about an hour. I assume this bottle isn't representative of the wine, wondering if it was heat damaged.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Wine of the day! Served blind, this surpassed an array of 90's Dujacs with its silky exotic appeal. This is amazing now, and feels like it has room for further evolution. This is the textbook definition of what I want in my glass when I reach for red Burgundy.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
Served blind, the aroma was off to start. I thought it was slightly corked, someone else thought VA. Regardless of this unfortunate aroma, the palate was quite sweet and pretty. Just when we had given up on it ever coming around, it astonishingly did. The unpleasant notes disappeared and it was full of glorious spice -- but it took over 90 minutes to get to that point, and it was dumb luck it didn't all just wind up in the dump bucket. In the end, a great wine, but if this bottle is representative then get ready for a roller coaster ride.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Served blind, this was a top tier Grand Cru performance that matched or exceeded pretty much the entire field of 90's Dujac Grand Cru wines. Gorgeously elegant, this overperforming masterpiece was the Amoureuses of the tasting. A stunner I would be thrilled to revisit.
2007 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Slightly oxidized, drinkable but this lacked the cut and tension one would expect.
