Some 2020 Red Burgs

Introduction

Thought I’d break open a few ‘20s to get some impressions of the vintage. Why these? They were at hand. All have good depth fruit and potential, a good sign post for the vintage.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2020 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Pretty nose, with light floral notes and a mix of dark red fruit and sweeter red fruit. Mid-weight palate of cherry and strawberry, light but charming, tasty even. Bright with a modest finish. Could be more acidic but overall this is still in balance. Not a ton of structure in evidence, could be an earlier drinker, though as it develops and the fruit calms down it will likely grow more interesting. Good.

  • 2020 Gilbert et Christine Felettig Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Cherry, maybe cranberry on the nose, very red fruited, a hint of earthy depth. More crunchy strawberries and cherries in the palate with a counterpoint of minerality. Mid weight but a bit deeper than the Bertheau village Chambolle. A lot more structure thought - tannin, acid, deeper, longer finish. This will need some age to really shine. Really quite good.

  • 2020 Gilbert et Christine Felettig Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Nose a little less showy than the Felettig village C-M, perhaps a touch reduced, showing a little gunshot sulfur. It is mixed with floral red fruits though. The palate is darker, still red fruited, but with more earth and minerality. Fairly tannic, medium+ or better length finish, but lots of deep delicious fruit and earthy notes riding on a pretty energetic mouthful. I’m not sure it’s better than the village C-M, will have to see how these develop. Still, very good now.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2020 Domaine Pierre Guillemot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Serpentières 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

Lovely dark fruited nose, earthy and dense. Rich though medium+ density, lots of cherry now, very long intense finish. Very good balance, and very tannic, a little powdery. Tongue tingling in a good way. A lot here. I like this now and it has a ton of promise.

  • 2020 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

Very bright red fruited nose, some charming violets appear on swirling, maybe some orange rind. Dark red fruited palate, loam, mineral, really good density and flavors, mouth filling in a great way. Long finish and tart cherry lingers in the mouth. Moderate tannins, will need some time to really develop into a butterfly. Closest to a wow wine today, this is extremely good.

Closing

A lot of different villages represented but in general these were dark red fruited and had good depth. I was very pleased with the Felettig - a good showing for a producer new to me.
