Introduction

Dan hosted and Elise and Dan prepared a fantastic 4 course meal to compliment the four courses of wine! Thank you both for such a great time and entertaining us in your new building! The new place will be exquisite when it's finished!

OK...the tasting....our periodic get together to enjoy wines with out comparing them to others...it is nice to sit back, get a nice pour (or a couple of them) and really focus and enjoy each wine! Nothing better than a great view, great friends, great food, and of course, great wines! I don't think life gets much better than that!

Flight 1 - Champagne (1 Note)

Enjoyed this while visiting Dan's new place that he and Elise are having redone...view is spectacular, and one I don't think anyone will ever tire of! Lots of space and windows....can't wait for him to move in and get invited to another get-together! Yes, I am being presumptuous, but why not!?!? Oh, and the Champagne and appetizers were nice too!

Flight 2 - Chardonnay (1 Note)

Was looking forward to tasting this Chardonnay, and it did not disappoint! Francophiles, keep away....New world drinkers, kick back and enjoy!

  • 2019 Kongsgaard Chardonnay 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

First Kongsgaard Chardonnay (not counting an older Judge that was less than impressive)...was told these were meant to be drunk young, and I believe that. The wine was delicious, but lacked acidity, IMO. Very buttery, with purity of fruit shining through! Lots of mango, melon and pear, with some Meyers lemon and toast oak. Mouth-coating and nice finish. I could drink these easily. Solid 94 for my palate.

Flight 3 - THAT Bottle (Red) - Pomerol (1 Note)

Served blind - 20 Questions - Well, what can I say, those guys rocked! Immediately pegged it as right bank and a younger vintage (although did take a couple questions to narrow down the exact vintage)...no one guessed the wine, but as it was not a popular wine nor a well known wine, that was not too surprising...all in all, they did an awesome job!

  • 2012 Château La Violette 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Prep: Stood upright for 3 hours, then a splash decant to remove sediment (there wasn't much until some fine sediment at the very bottom of the bottle)

This was drinking remarkably well! I previously had a 2008, and loved it, so I wanted to see how a younger vintage would taste. The 2012 did not disappoint! Plenty of fruit, violets and some forest floor showing with hints of anise, chocolate, tar and leather. Still pretty fruit forward, but fun to follow over an hour or two. Developed more complexity as time went on. I would recommend a 1-2 hour decant if drinking soon, or another couple years in the cellar to allow it to integrate even more. Still absolutely delicious and a joy to drink now, but could tell it is still not at the apex. 95+ to 96 now, and should get better.

Flight 4 - Sauternes (1 Note)

  • 2009 Château Rieussec 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Deep golden orange color. Slight hint of petrol on the nose (that blew off fairly quickly) followed by lots of orange peel, ripe stone fruits and hints of tropical fruit. Palate was divine, bombarding you with stone fruit, honeycomb, Seville oranges, with some spice. A great way to end an evening and went very well with the berry crisp and vanilla ice cream served with it! Solid 95 for me!
