Reds Tasting at Tablas Creek (Paso Robles)

Introduction

Tablas Creek needs no introduction at this point. Regenerative and biodynamic agriculture. Every single allowed varietal from Chateauneuf du Pape now planted with most from Beaucastel cuttings. Traditional Rhone blends and rare single varietal and blended wines. Walking the line between wines that have immediate appeal in the tasting room and many that can lay down for a decade+.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2021 Tablas Creek Counoise

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Adelaida District

Very Good++. I'd tasted and purchased this before and this just confirms how nice this varietal Counoise is. Clean and bright, bramble with a pleasing grip, nicely taut. So drinkable. Can be consumed across seasons, but this can really work well with a slight chill. Charcuterie?

  • 2021 Tablas Creek Côtes de Tablas

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Adelaida District

Excellent. Drinking so well already! All varietals on display in order of share. Zest, bright up front with black fruits, plum, and kirsch. Give this time to unwind and get some air. Age some bottles.

    47% Grenache
    30% Syrah
    15% Counoise
    8% Mourvedre

  • 2021 Tablas Creek Mourvèdre

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Adelaida District

Very Good++/Excellent. Hinting at nice things to come. Surprising acidity upfront joins chocolate, mint. Nice to drink now but a bit disjointed. I want some to lay down.

  • 2020 Tablas Creek En Gobelet

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Adelaida District

Excellent+. Loved this. Showing well already, plum, dark fruit, savory. Needs time and I'll lay some down.

    37% Grenache
    25% Mourvedre
    22% Syrah
    11% Counoise
    5% Tannat

This is their all head trained, dry farmed blend.

Update: This really needs a long decant right now to show itself properly. Otherwise, wait a solid 5+ years.

  • 2020 Tablas Creek Esprit de Tablas

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Adelaida District

Excellent. Any concerns I had for 2020 smoke taint are assuaged. Not a hint of smoke. Juicy but structured. Mourvedre clearly in the lead! Hard to put down. Surprisingly punchy but serious. Another buy to lay down a few and have over a decade+.

  • 2018 Tablas Creek Esprit de Tablas

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Adelaida District

Very Good++/Excellent. I'm happy to have a few of these already slumbering in the cellar. Showing more balance right now across all varietals than the preceding 2020, Grenache zest, plum, energetic, but something felt a bit pulled in. Is this shutting down soon?

Closing

The wines were really singing to me today. My cellar is stuffed and yet I'll probably need to buy some of these.
