On the blind tasting we compared a true bordeaux cut with some new and old world imitations. It was very easy to spot the french, the argentine, the chilean and the kiwi. The south african tricked me with the italian.
2001 Veenwouden Classic 92 Points
South Africa, Coastal Region, Paarl
Deep, intende rubi red color. The nose revealed a caramel explosion, a little too much toasted from the 24 months in new french oak (80%). The palate had a strong chocolate note, cheewy polished tannins, very powerful and lingering. For me again the best of the night.

Rubi-violet, very intense and dark. The nose imediately reveals an undisquiseable chilean mentol. It is folowed by some very complex aromas of espresso, pepper, ripe dark fruit. The palate could use a little more acidity, there's a touch of alcohol surplus. It is very pleasant and long lasting but a little overpriced.

Deep rubi color, no aging signs. Very aromatic, spices, plums, mentol, floral. The palate is well balanced, caramel, untuous and raspeberry jam. Very powerful with some strong tannins, very long lasting on the finish.

This one was surely the closest to the only real bordeaux wine of the tasting. It did fool some of us but quite a few noticed a little too much oak for bordeaux and this gave it away. Some good signs of aging, complex nose, very aromatic. Good acidity, very old world style, good persistence.

2001 Sportoletti Umbria Rosso Villa Fidelia 90 Points
Italy, Umbria
Deep rubi color, no sign of age. The nose is fruity with chocolate and coconut notes. Well balanced and very persistent but a little too young for now, better wait at least another couple of years.

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
The rubi color already shows some good signs of aging. The nose is very aromatic and complex, terciary aromas. The palate still shows good acidity although the fruit already starts to fade, I'd say this is a little down the hill already, but still elegant and good persistence.
