  • 2018 Vice Versa Chardonnay Platt Vineyard 96 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Aromas of abundant dark yellow fruits, bitter deep hay, big stones, and dark prickly pineapples flesh. Dark on the nose, like a sketchy alleyway.

    On the palate are deep yellow fruits, pineapple rind, bitter minerals and a quiet acidity.

    Maybe going into a phase soon as the bright and fresh acidity was more shy and quiet. The vibrancy and exciting energy finally surfaced with some time, better late than never I guess! Air these out a bit if they're performing a little sluggish and also serve at a cooler temp.

    Sharp nose of bread and yeasty notes with a deep, fleshy yellow fruit.

    The flavors were just a notch less exciting than what the nose seemed to promise. Dark and deep yellow fruits with subtle yeastiness, bitter straw flavors that coats the fruits lightly. There are flavors of tilled, dried earth on the palate as well.

    Heavy on the fruits and round on the palate. Feel like it lacked just a bit of acidity or that might be because of the bit of age this has already.

  • 2010 Château de Pommard Pommard Grand Vin 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard

    This has a smell of blue cheese (in a good way), dried rose pedals, gentle aged cranberries with a nice freshness, damp oak, and gentle earth. I personally enjoyed the nose because of the cheesy nose.

    Flavors of gentle red fruits blended with a bit of tobacco, graphite, and spiced damp tree bark. Red fruits show a bit of age of some round (almost flat) plum notes.

    The nose initially showed earthy, dark fruits like prunes and plums, wet damp earth, and even some mushrooms. With time, fruits move away from prunes and into darker fruits and brooding dark floral notes emerge.

    Just like the nose, the palate needed some time to turn into something much tastier. Initial notes of fresh cranberries, gentle forest floor with damp earth, and gently spiced oak. Great freshness already. Cranberries fade within a couple of hours and dark fruits and berries surface, a deep stream of earth with a spiced excitement, mixed with minerals that are also somehow spiced, very interesting. Fruits turn black with time while keeping a nice bitter core of black minerals with a nice sheen, imagine something like obsidian and if it were bitter. Nice finish of steeped tea and tree bark on the finish.

    It's like the wine learned how to open up its aromas through controlled breathing, breathing a sigh of relief and releasing everything it had. The same happened on the palate as it develops into something much more serious with some time. I'm not sure how common are the candies with a thin neutral tasting film that's wrapped around it, but it's usually messing with the actual flavors of the candy itself until it completely melts away. That's exactly what happened here with the flavors. Drink now with an hour or two of decanting, and enjoy. 96-97+
