Introduction

Always wanted to try some wines from Pouilly-Fumé and this is an awesome time to do it.

Flight 1 - Sancerre vs Pouilly-Fumé (6 Notes)

  • 2021 Christophe Monget Coteaux du Giennois Les Genêts Gris 91 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Coteaux du Giennois

Inviting nose of dropped fresh pears on a field of grass and whole uncut yellow apples. Good freshness and stony aromas.

Palate matches nose completely with the addition of a gentle spice on the finish. Fresh front initially but dulls a bit on the mid palate. Finishes with a deeper yellow fruit with a bit of minerality.

  • 2020 Domaine Yvon et Pascal Tabordet Pouilly-Fumé Les Calcis 93 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

A pleasant and natural funk of a field of tall dried grass with stone, dried earth, and a subtle but notable scent of white flowers. Light notes of brown pears, unpeeled longans, and halved green apples without any sharp tartness.

Flavors of nice fruits but more of the outside/skin notes of fruits, like smooth skinned green pears and the clean, shiny exterior of a ripe starfruit. The fruits then lead into a gently bitter tree bark and steeped tea finish, and continues to linger on with a darker mineral note. The fruits stay throughout, making the flavor journey on the palate pretty nice.

My favorite of the lineup. This is a banger for what you pay for.

  • 2022 Domaine Dominique et Janine Crochet Sancerre Le Grand Chemarin 90 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Aromas of spilled juice from both soft bartlett pears and gentle lychees without any tartness. Floral notes of white flowers and a touch of grass from afar as well.

On the palate is a tart bright white fruit like green apple but not exactly.. hard to pin the fruit here, and maybe because it’s quite faint. Good acidity but only seems to compliment the crushed stony notes here, amplifying the bitterness a bit. Good freshness nonetheless.

  • 2019 Vincent Pinard Sancerre Le Château

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

A bit unique on the nose. Something like a rubber tree (or a tree that has that runny, rubbery smelling sap) in somewhat of a good way, overly tart or sour round Asian pears. The tartness reminds me of lychee flesh that has gone bad but I guess in a good way, as if this were intentional like brett in wine.

Palate is just as similar to the nose. I imagine this is what a rubber tree tastes like. There’s fruit but again it's as if they are slightly spoiled and tart. This reminds me a bit of like a rubber band but minus the acridness. These notes all taint the crushed stone notes as well. I’m sure this is the style and intentional, not one I fancy though.

I honestly thought something might be off with this bottle, but no one seemed to notice it, not even the person pouring. It's most likely just me..

  • 2019 Henri Bourgeois Sancerre d'Antan 90 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Nose of intense deep pears with a nice prickliness that tickles the nose and with a nice lift as well. Wet stones with dried earth round out the remaining aromas.

Palate consisted of deep pear notes with a blend of white flowers and something that reminds you of honey but not exactly (take away the heavy sweetness, any waxiness and any bitterness). Finishes with deep bitter stones and a bit of spicy straw.

  • 2019 Didier Dagueneau Blanc Etc 92 Points

France, Loire Valley, Vin de France

Some sort of white berries on the nose with white and orange-yellow flowers. Very lifted floral aromas accompanied by a gentle sweetness from some pears. This has a nice perfume to it.

Palate showed clean pear notes, a thick but light honey note, gentle spice on the finish with sparkly minerals. A gentle tree bark note and straw as well.

Loved the fruit on this. Second favorite of the lineup.

Closing

Pouilly-Fumé came out on top in this battle. I just enjoyed the fruit much more. Sancerre was a bit more strict on the fruit and more serious. Fun tasting!
