Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 1955 Château Brane-Cantenac 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

It was a pleasure to taste 20 vintages of Brane-Cantenac. All wines were tasted blind and with little time (10min per flight of 4 wines). Coming from the Margaux appellation, the wine convinced 1) with its accessibility of all vintages, 2) often very feminine and fresh vinification and 3) especially the consistency of quality to be emphasized. So it was not surprising that all 20 bottles (for the first time in this tasting with 12 people) were empty. At the same time, it could also be noted that the very great complexity for ratings above 94 points is often somewhat lacking. Very exciting to observe were the significant change in fruit. Until the 2009 vintage, this was often primarily red-fruited, light and very strongly Cabernet influenced. From the 2009 vintage on, a clear shift to more extraction and sweetness of the fruit is noticeable. The last, often great vintages from 2015 to 2020 are ripe but still with a good freshness/acidity (except for 2015 according to my impression).

    Tasting Note:
    - Accessible nose, similar to 1982 with even more Cabarnet fruit, peppers, tomatoey, foliage, lots of mushrooms and more advanced.
    - Fairly similar to the nose, likewise lacks some ripeness of fruit here, is a bit rustic and not round enough for my taste. A bit one-sided, with rough edges. Has almost Burgundian hints, very light.
    - 91 points

  • 1982 Château Brane-Cantenac 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Tasting Note:
    - First notes of maturity apparent, delicate red fruit behind, very spicy, classic pepper / cabernet notes with the wood in the background. Is very accessible.
    - More advanced on the palate, has flavors of forest floor, underbrush, bayberries. But somehow is not very complex either, the fruit is a bit thin and not round enough, has some rough edges. Nice acidity structure.

    Tasting Note:
    - Significantly more intensity and fruit, also first hints of dark fruit recognizable. Rather red and dark plums, currants.
    - Very nice on the palate with polished tannins, still has some tannins but is a lot of fun, very great structure. With nice acidity to the finish.
    - Striking here in this flight (compared to 1955, 1982) that there is the most fruit and balance.

    Tasting Note:
    - Intriguing nose, surprisingly good, has pretty good fruit too, almost as much fruit as the 1989 but not the balance as this.
    - Nice to drink on the palate, also feminine with lots of Cabernet fruit. Great acidity but also has some rough edges, still lots of tannins present that probably won't fully integrate. But still wonderful to drink!

  • 1995 Château Brane-Cantenac 89 Points

    Tasting Note:
    - Still a bit reserved, also has quite a bit of Cabernet fruit (parprika, tomato) but a bit rounder, the barrel is nicely integrated. Behind it aromas of forest floor and undergrowth.
    - On the palate still a lot of freshness, yet tertiary aromas of foliage, has some greenish components and still rustic tannins. A bit too much acidity. The wine is overall out of balance.

    Tasting Note:
    - A slightly more complete nose with more dark fruit flavors compared to the 1995, has some astringent tannins, green touch here too and still strong tannins. Still seems a bit young. Questionable if it's worth storing here any further, certainly decant.

  • 1999 Château Brane-Cantenac 91 Points

    Tasting Note:
    - More wood on the nose but rounder with more dark fruit. On the palate nice, richer in dark fruit than the predecessors 1998 and 1995, is nice to drink for me. Clearly better, is a bit richer in fruit but with very nice acidity - fun to drink even if the acidity is probably too high for some. The velvety is thus somewhat missing.

  • 2002 Château Brane-Cantenac 90 Points

    Tasting Note:
    - The first vintage of this tasting (all before were 1999 an older) with a bit more sweet fruit, here it loses the filigree, Cabernet driven fruit aspect more towards ripe fruit. Also wood and vanilla noticeable.
    - Some green flavors or bitterness, or too high acidity. The palate lacks a bit of balance.

Flight 3 (4 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Brane-Cantenac 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    - Accessible nose, red and dark fruit, very nice, wood in the background, coffee, you already notice that something nice follows on the palate.
    - Wow, round, filigree, ripe fruit, round tannins and everything where it should be. At most, just a little too little acidity. But the aromas make it a lot of fun. A bit ponderous with time?
    - When tasted again, beautiful tetrary aromas come to the fore and the acidity is also very coherent. Must correct upwards here.

    Tasting Note:
    - The nose of the wine is more perfumed and shows signs of artificial fruitiness.
    - On the palate, the wine is extremely smooth and supple, with a round texture. Compared to the 2000 vintage, it seems a little less complex and has too many perfumed aromas for my taste.

    Tasting Note:
    - This vintage shows similar aromas to the 2003, but with a more honest fruitiness, showing both dark and red fruit notes.
    - On tasting, one is immediately struck by the soft mouthfeel, accompanied by soft tannins and a readily perceptible acidity that is well balanced. The structure of this wine stands out from that of the 2004 vintage.

  • 2009 Château Brane-Cantenac 92 Points

    Tasting Note:
    - Darker fruit aromas are more noticeable in this wine, including plums and cassis, accompanied by nuances of vanilla, lightly toasted toast and an enticing coffee note.

    - On the palate, there is a pronounced acidity and also a medium-strong tannin content. Both are pleasant, but at the moment tannins are a little too dominant. The wine could still use some time to mature in order to unfold its full potential. I would recommend to decant for 1 hour.
At the moment 2005 seems to have more structure and in a better spot to drink.

  • 2010 Château Brane-Cantenac 93 Points

The last, often great vintages from 2015 to 2020 are ripe but still with a good freshness/acidity (except for 2015 according to my impression).

    Tasting Note:
    - This wine impresses with wonderful blackberry notes that appear somewhat sweeter and are pleasantly reminiscent of blackberry jam. Compared to the 2009 vintage, it seems a little more restrained.
    - On the palate, one experiences gentle tannins, an exceptionally soft texture and an all-round successful/honest fruitiness. The use of wood is subtle and the acidity gives the wine a refreshing note. Although I usually prefer red fruit notes, this wine impresses me with its softness of mostly darker fruit.
    - Because the fruit is less clumsy compared to the 2009 I would rather drink 2010 today.

    Tasting Note:
    - This vintage is similar to the 2010, but is a little more restrained and emphasises red fruit aromas more strongly.
    - When tasting, it is noticeable that this wine has a slightly higher, even crisp acidity compared to the 2010, especially also compared to the 2009 vintage. Towards the finish, however, there is a certain dominance of quite strong tannins and acidity, accompanied by a slight bitterness. The balance seems to be lacking here.
    - Wait some years till opening these bottles, aeration recommended.

  • 2016 Château Brane-Cantenac 92 Points

The last, often great vintages from 2015 to 2020 are ripe but still with a good freshness/aciadity (except for 2015 according to my impression).

    Tasting Note:
    - This vintage shows a clear presence of wood, accompanied by aromas of blue fruits. The fruitiness seems sugary and very ripe.

    - It is impressive how ripe this wine is without being overripe. It almost has something of candy floss. On the palate, however, the high quality of the tannins (much better than in the 90s) and the good acidity stand out. The fruitiness, however, seems a bit too sweet to me but the present acidity is holding against to have an overall nice experience of the wine.

    Tasting Note:
    - This vintage is somewhat reminiscent of the 2016 vintage, but is fresher and presents aromas of blackberries and blue fruit with a cooler note.

    - On the palate, it shows a fresh characteristic, accompanied by a crisp acidity and yet ripe tannins with great potential. It seems as if all the components could develop even further and merge into a harmonious whole.

It seems that this wine could be even better than the 2010 vintage, although the latter had more complexity (at the moment). Hopefully, the 2020 vintage will maintain a similarly good acid structure.

Wow, this is very drinkable at the moment. 93-94 points.

By the way, all vintages from 2015 to 2020, none were closed today.

    Tasting Note:
    - This wine reveals aromas of blue fruit, mint and a hint of candy.
    - When tasting, this wine reveals itself to be extremely pleasant, with well-balanced acidity and tannins. Although it may seem slightly candied, overall it is very enjoyable to drink.
    - However, for me it does not come close to the level of the 2020 vintage.

    Tasting Note:
This vintage in the same flight with 2016, 2020, 2019 stands out for its ripe fruit flavours. The tannins are still a bit harsh and it doesn't seem to offer too much pleasure yet. The fruitiness seems a bit monotonous and there is an alcoholic note perceptible on the nose. It lacks tension for me. Definitely to be classified behind the other three vintages.
