Introduction

Progres (Produttori Associati Vino Grechetto di Todi) is making a big splash of publicity and tastings in France and Italy. This one was attended by one enologist, four producers, and the president of the association. We were told that the terroir made this Grechetto uniquely different from other Grechettos, and the Grechetto di Todi expresses well not just the terroir but also the vintage characteristics. All were 2007.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2007 Cantina Peppucci Grechetto Todi Montorsolo

    Italy, Umbria, Todi

Peachy coloured. Not very intense, but nice nose of ripe yellow fruits, fresh cucumber, slightly floral. More intensity of flavours than aromas, with fruit, minerals and bitter almonds; alcohol seems high (label = 13.5%), moderate acidity. Rather rich and round, good length and persistence, touch of bitterness on finish.

  • 2007 Cantina Tudernum Grechetto Todi

    Italy, Umbria, Todi

Peachy/gold colour. Subtle sweet, ripe, yellow fruits on nose. More on palate with almonds, apricots, melons and big minerality. Highish acidity (good), tiny bit of RS. Nicely balanced, full-bodied, long with slightly bitter finish.

  • 2007 Tenuta San Rocco Grechetto Todi Poggio Marcigliano

    Italy, Umbria, Todi

Medium lemon yellow. Nose of light tropical fruits, ripe apricots, bitter almond. On palate, hardly any fruit, but big minerality and very savoury. Moderate acidity, apricot-pit-like bitterness (nice, though), moderate length and complexity.

  • 2007 Franco Todini Grechetto Todi Bianco del Cavaliere

    Italy, Umbria, Todi

Medium lemon yellow. Complex nose of tropical fruits, yellow stone fruits, aromatic herbs, seashore, ozone, fresh cucumbers. Very savoury with big minerality, moderate acidity, typical pleasing bitter-almond finish. Good length and complexity.

  • 2007 Cantina Roccafiore Umbria Bianco Roccafiore

    Italy, Umbria

Dark peachy colour. Nose of oak, vanilla, roasted coffee and cocoa beans. On palate, huge oaky domination, medium acidity, tannins from oak, bitter almond finish. Unbalanced. Winemaker said that barrique was not used, but rather a large *new* oak botte.

Closing

Distinguishing characteristics were (1) the lack of intensity on the nose, (2) the medium acidity and (3) the almondy bitterness on the palate carrying through to the long finish. The wines did not improve with time in the glass; on the contrary, they were better at first pour (very cold). Even though the aromas were slightly more pronounced as they warmed, the bitterness was less pleasant. It really needs food to be correctly appreicated. All in all, a good wine from a fine variety in a great appellation.
