Introduction

Jordan grabbed his Coravin and some Italian wines with an emphasis on the north

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2018 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Dogliani

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Dogliani

From Coravin. Dusty spice, muted plums, a little wet clay. Juicy, fleshy, savoury plums backed by drying and slightly coarse tannic grip. Feels a little tired. Non intrusive alcoholic warmth on the finish.

  • 2016 Cantina del Signore Coste della Sesia La Crotta Spanna

Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Coste della Sesia

From Coravin. Slightly earthy, dried herbs and flowers, a little muted cherry fruit. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, quite Bovril/beef extract on the palate, plentiful drying tannins with a slightly sour cherry underpin, those dried herbs join on the finish. Long, rather nice.

  • 2015 Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema Carema

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Carema

From Coravin. A touch of dusty star anise, dried orange peel and pot pourri, a little sour plum and cherry. Juicy, freshy acidity, similar flavour profile to the nose, the tannins support and help carry this long on the mid palate. Yum.

  • 2005 Moccagatta Barbaresco Bric Balin

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

From Coravin. Polished oak lends vanilla, caramel, coconut, floral top notes especially rose, muted cranberry. Medium plus intensity acidity, more cranberry fruit here. 18 years old and really not that tertiary. Not for me with all that oak though.

  • 2007 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Duemilasette

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

From Coravin. Cherry, plums, a little sweet spice, pot pourri and rose petal, clay. Juicy, fleshy, cherry, plummy, fruit persists long carried by savoury and powdery textured tannins which introduce a little umami on the finish, balanced, good.

  • 2015 G.D. Vajra Barolo Coste di Rose

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Slightly lifted notes initially, red cherry rose petal, quite floral in fact, a little red currant and cranberry. Juicy, fleshy, fruit tea notes join the cherry and cranberry all of which are super fresh, super persistent powdery tannins, long, balanced, lovely.

  • 2014 G.D. Vajra Barolo Ravera

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Slightly darker hued fruit aromas on the nose that the Costi di Rose; plums joins the cherry, also feels like a little more oak; sweet spice here, then tar, slightly earth and a little fennel dried French tarragon notes. Plentiful drying, grippy tannins, that fennel/French tarragon note more prevalent on the palate, slightly non intrusive alcohol warmth and a very slightly dilute quality on the finish.

  • 2013 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cannubi

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Fruit tea; cranberry and rosehip, a little tar, red cherry and plum, touch of sweet oak spice, slightly tertiary mushroom notes. Juicy acid and fruit aren't quite present enough to balance the grape and wood tannins which are hard and drying, touches of caramel and sweet spice on the finish. Hmm.

  • 2013 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Beef extract, umami; earthy and savoury, a little plum, very slight sweet spice, pot pourri. Juicy, fleshy, savoury and meaty, a little plummy fruit, mushroom, plentiful wood and grape tannins close down the palate, touch of non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.

  • 2015 Conte d'Attimis-Maniago Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Casali Maniago

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali

From Coravin. Ooh, first Brett of the day! But not at all overpowering, meaty savoury, a little sweaty gym kit, but also wild blackcurrant and brambles, earth, mushrooms, complex nose. Juicy, fleshy, fruit more to the fore on the palate, wild bramble and blackcurrant, Jordan says 'dirty black plums' and I'm inclined to agree, tannins are gritty and grainy but in support. Black liquorice as well as slightly tertiary and meaty notes. Pretty good.

  • 2014 Ermacora Friuli Colli Orientali Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali

From Coravin. Slightly meaty, sweaty blackcurrant, savoury, slight barbeque notes. Juicy, fleshy more red hued fruit in the mouth the tannins are quite oaky, drying, a little wet earth and a touch of alcohol warmth on the back of the palate. Feels a little out of whack. Meh

Lots to love here (including Jordan's kindness and generosity to allow me to plunder his cellar).
