Introduction

This event has been on hold for a while and finally has come back! Thank you so Caveau for bringing this back and hosting such an amazing event!

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2008 Faiveley Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

This was in full flight as soon as my nose went to the glass. There is so much depth and balance that you need just a moment to take it all in with tones of buttered popcorn, meyer lemons, toast, red apples, pears, quince, vanilla beans, and some yellow florals to round it all out. The Medium/full bodied feel is plush, elegant, and refined with loads of depth and balance that carries over from the nose. The crisp, medium+ acidity is beautifully integrated with just a bit of mouthwatering qualities whilst also showing off a lengthy finish that lingers on the back of the palate. This is a chiseled, heavyweight fighter of a Grand Cru White Burg. It is right in its zone and is just a real joy to drink!

  • 2010 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Oh wow. We're in for a real treat here. This is so defined and fragrant as it fills up the glass with saline, flint notes, pears, apples, crushed rocks, yellow flowers, nectarines, vanilla, tree fruits, and some meyer lemons. The nose here is the definition of layered. Its like you're peeling an onion with each tones becoming more strong as each layer disappears. The Medium bodied feel is silky and deft with crisp, medium+ acidity that still has just the right amount of bite left in it before really leaning into the lengthy finish. This is just a killer bottle of Raveneau. It's right where you want it if you still want just that bit of primary fruit while the acidity has pulled back to allow this to really shine.

  • 2011 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

There is always that trepidation hangover from Fevre's pre-diam days that just won't go away for me. A bit of nervousness as I want this to be what it can be. Good thing that is exactly what we have here with a real rounded style to the nose of saline, apples, pears, meyer lemons, toast, stone fruits, crushed rocks, spring florals, and a touch of nougat. There is excellent depth and style here with a silky, Medium bodied feel and crisp, medium+ acidity that has just a bit of bite to it. It will take a while for me to fully feel comfortable again with older Fevre. It's a pavlovian reaction for me that will take time to go away. It is bottles like this that give me hope and I am more than happy to keep on enjoying this!

  • 2020 Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

This is a bit of a shock to the system after the more mature whites, but once that shock passes, this is a very pretty and lively MSD. There is a lovely purity to the nose that I'm finding attractive with a more red-fruited take of strawberries, red cherries, fresh picked berries, violets, herbs, some crushed rocks, spice notes, and a touch of earth notes. The Medium bodied feel is deft and fresh with crisp, medium+ acidity and youthful, medium tannins. This certainly needs time to fully come together, but I'm really digging what is here already. The purity of the vintage is really coming through, but the nose and palate (for obvious reasons) still need to meld together before singing in harmony.

  • 2005 Nicolas Potel Latricières-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

This is wide open and perfumed as it fills up the glass with red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, a touch of herbs, black tea notes, violets, spice tones, and a touch of sour red fruits. There is still a primary nature to the nose, but it is well in balance and showing off good depth. The Medium bodied feel carries through that balance from the nose while showing off integrated, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. This is really open for business while it still shows off a good amount of primary fruits. Everything is in balance though while showing off good depth across the nose and palate.

  • 2014 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Oh how I wish I had a full bottle of this and not just a generous pour. Still, at least it's in my glass! This is just sexy as the tones of red apples, bosc pears, quince, navel oranges, flint, cream peaches, custard, saline, and acacia flowers meld beautifully together. I just want to smell this for the next 30 minutes straight! There is excellent depth and balance as well that carries through on the Medium/full bodied feel and crisp, medium acidity. The feel is just seamless. This does feel like it's right in its window as the acidity has pulled back a fair bit and has become well-integrated while the finish just doesn't want to quit. The acidity does give me some worry as to how long this will further age, but this is Carpe Diem time and I'm absolutely Carpe-ing the Diem right here!

  • 2012 Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Looking at others notes, I'm glad at least this bottle was sound. Still, it did seem a hint tired as the tones of custard, nectarines, red apples, pears, buttered toast, vanilla beans, and a hint of oak are working well together, but just a little faded. The Medium bodied feel shows off good balance with well-integrated, Medium acidity. I would drink this up if I owned bottles. This possibly could be a bit of a unicorn looking at the notes, but time is not in this wine's favor. That said, this bottle was very good right now and enjoyable.

  • 2002 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Roncières 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Awwwwww yea, this is bringing some classic George Clinton and I'm am here for all of it. It took about a half hour to warm up and get going, but it was a savory and funky bitch when it did with tones of sour red cherries, raspberries, cranberries, violets, licorice, earth notes, tobacco, and a touch of dried savory herbs. The Medium bodied feel is robust and seamless with crisp, medium+ acidity and resolved, medium tannins. This was just killing it on the night. This was all about the funky side of NSG and a rather old-school one at that. Many have cleaned up their act today and I certainly respect and enjoy that, but sometimes you just need to lay down the funk and nothing but the funk.

  • 2014 Domaine Bruno Clair Bonnes Mares 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

The nose is heady and perfumed as the tones of red cherries, fresh picked berries, raspberries, red flowers, spice notes, violets, fresh herbs, tobacco leaf, and strawberries just flow out of the glass. This shows off the depth and class I would expect from this level of Grand Cru. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and refined with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. The structure still has some clear youth to it while the feel is just a smidge rough. This is a classy wine in every single way that is just starting to emerge, but really 3+ years will certainly help get it where it needs to go.

  • 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

The nose is still a slight bit coiled up, but it's more down the the untamed power that it still possesses. There is loads of depth with a tartness to the dark red-fruited tones of raspberries, dark red cherries, tobacco notes, dark red fruits, licorice, dark spices, violets, roasted herbs, and a touch of earthy notes. The Medium/full bodied feel still shows off a good bit of youth while the medium+ acidity is well balanced and the medium+ tannins are still on the youthful side. This is still a bit of a bucking bronco that will need more time to fully get where it needs to go. This does show off all of the hallmarks of what can and likely will be a great Red Burgundy, but more patience is needed at the moment.

  • 2004 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos de La Bussière

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Well, this is certainly a controversial wine. I've been hesitant to open this for a long time due to the amount of greenie meanie comments I've seen. Was that here? Well, kinda. The green flavors didn't overpower and its entirely possible that I was looking for them. What I can for sure say is that I have had this wine in my possession since 2007 and this is a wine that is really on the downslope (or at least this bottle was). The acidity is a bit bitter and the tannins are still a bit chalky while the Medium bodied feel is lighter and lacks on the mid-palate. It's faded a bit now and while enjoyable on the $50 level I paid for it many years back, Roumier didn't weave any magic on this with the vintage and I'm glad that I didn't pay the current going rate for this.

  • 1999 Domaine Perrot-Minot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d'Orveau Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

This is clearly a love it or hate it wine. In many ways, I fall on the fence of liking it but not loving it. More in that I enjoyed this as an aged Pinot Noir and not as an aged Chambolle from a top vintage if that makes sense. Upon first pour, this shows off some harnessed power behind the tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, sour red fruits, currants, tobacco leaf, some wood, violets, licorice, and earth spices. The Medium/full bodied feel has reigned in a ton since I last had this 15odd years ago, but it is still much larger scaled for a Chambolle premier cur while the medium acidity is balanced and the medium tannins have predominately pulled back. As a Chambolle, this ain't it. As a really good, larger scaled Pinot Noir that is approaching 25 years old, it's really damned tasty. It all comes down to what expectation and desire you have going into this.
