France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Side-by-side with the 2016 (which ironically was the same pair last time I had this wine). Alas, this bottle was showing more advanced, particularly on the nose, than the bottle from a few years ago. While it was advanced, it was totally drinkable and providing some pleasure, and held on consistently over the course of dinner.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Once again, and coincidentally, side-by-side with the 2000. This bottle opened reduced though enjoyable enough but got better and better with a few hours of air. Still not in a prime drinking window so best to hold for a a couple years. Upside from here.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
A sensational bottle of this wine and captures all the upside of the vintage with none of the troublesome downside. Gorgeous, intense nose of an array of orchard fruits with chalk, mineral and light honey layers. Palate has towering proportion and pin point grace of a classic Montrachet. Long finish. Bravo.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Such a great Richebourg that it's hard to comprehend whcih grower/producer may have parted with this juice and provided to Jadot. One more reminder of how times have changed. I digress. Beautiful, classically Vosne aroma of black cherry laced with intense Asian spice and black tea. Excellent concentration with round, supple fruit that goes on and on. In the middle of a long peak drinking window.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
96/97/02 flight. My least favorite of the three as it wasn't totally harmonious with a slight structural edge that isn't completely integrated. On its own, I might not have picked up on the relative imbalance but next to the more complete 97 and 02, it was noticeable. Very good, none the less.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
96/97/02 - Jadot crushed 97 and you can safely bet a 97 will outperform a 96 side-by-side, which was once again the case here. Gorgeous old-vine, fleshy, concentrated fruit with so much meaty complexity. Nothing out of balance with fresh structure holding the abundant fruit together.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
96/97/02 - my favorite of the three and just by a hair over the 97. So complete and so at peak. Lovely, full, intense aromas of meaty black cherry with spice. The palate has excellent concentration and vibrancy. Meat and spice layers. Excellent.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
This has beautifully sweet red and black cherry that is laced with so many enticing layers of autumnal character. Mindbendingly good from the get go and at least initially preferred to the 1966 Chapelle-Chambertin side by side.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
Starts out emphasizing its tertiary elements of earth, mulled spices and roasted game. With time the fresh fruit ascends, and this just kept getting more deep, broad and intense. A sensational old Burgundy strutting its stuff in a late peak window.
