Introduction

Travis and Mario hosted their annual event, this time at Rapport. A nice venue, lovely food, lovely wines.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2021 Kobayashi Winery Viognier WeatherEye Vineyard

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

Wonderful acidity. I really love good Viognier from Washington State, as the best examples express the showy aromatics of the variety but have cut, acid and focus. This is among the best examples.

  • 2021 Kobayashi Winery Marsanne Skin Contact WeatherEye Vineyard

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Rattlesnake Hills

Dark color. Insane nose, orange wine, oxidative. The palate is a complete about face, tense acidity and razor sharp focus. This is a wine to contemplate.

  • 2022 Kobayashi Winery Cabernet Franc X Canlis Red Willow Vineyard

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

From an entire barrel sold to Canlis. Whole cluster, sans souffre Cabernet Franc. Insanely cool and edgy aromatics with the best aspects of Cab Franc, leaf and spice. The palate at this point though is less ready. Big, juicy, raw. It's a steak wine. This really seems to want a few years to settle down a bit.

  • 2021 Kobayashi Winery Syrah

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

My goodness but Travis' Syrah are the best. Smoky, sultry, Cote-Rotie has landed in Washington State. Quite light on its feet (Travis said it came in at 12.5% instead of the labeled 14%) and just gorgeous. Lovely.

Straight from barrel. Primary, energetic, pure, everything I have come to expect from Travis.
