Introduction

First ever vertical of Rumbo Al Norte to be held with guests coming in from all around the world. What a privilege to be able to taste the range for wines include rare vintages from 2011. In the present of winemakers Dani and Fernando who ensure everything is in prefect condition including the order and serving condition. They even tried through the wines weeks before to ensure the condition was prefect for this dinner.

Flight 1 - Aperitif (1 Note)

  • 2020 Comando G El Tamboril Blanco 91 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León

Aromas of grapefruit, not very expressive on the nose with slight bitterness on the palate. Would have preferred a little more acidity or precision on the palate

Flight 2 - 3 newly introduced Village wines (3 Notes)

Flight 3 - Horizontal of Grand Crus from 2020 (4 Notes)

No Brena made in 2020 so 2018 presented

  • 2018 Comando G La Bréna 95 Points

    Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid

Beautiful nose lots of red fruits, mineral and lifted. Transparent on the palate with grainy tannins and med acid. Long lingering finish with grippy tannins. This was the wine which open my eyes to Comando G and this refreshes my memory.

  • 2020 Comando G Las Umbrias Las Rozas de Puerto Real 95 Points

    Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid

Aroma of rose and violet, candied cherry on the front of palate with some rusticity at the back due to the tannins. Hopefully age will soften on the palate on the tannins but otherwise this is beautiful wine.

  • 2020 Comando G Tumba del Rey Moro 96 Points

    Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid

Bandung, rose petals a little coarse, but beautiful acid with coarse drying tannins. This comes from ungrafted vines.

Coconut, vanilla mixed with red fruits, beautiful aromas. Consistent flavour and seamless on the palate. Impressive for a first vintage which goes to show the quality of the vineyard and the ability for it age.

  • 2020 Comando G Rumbo al Norte 96 Points

Super aromas with good complexity including front and back. Some hints of stems but only so slight adding to the complexity with a little VA. Dense and structure with a little of funky.

  • 2021 Comando G Rumbo al Norte 97 Points

    Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid

Beautiful with a slightly modernist nose, lovely transparency on the palate. Touch of funk with some green notes as this has a little more whole cluster. Fine and grippy tannins.

  • 2016 Comando G Rumbo al Norte 98 Points

    Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid

My favourite amongst all, elegant beautiful aromas with good depth showing violet, consistent on the palate with good acid. Expansive and broad with good lift ending with a silky smooth tannins. Well deserving of the 100 RP.

Flight 6 (1 Note)

  • 2011 Comando G Crianza Biologica 93 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León

Made only for the 2nd time in 2011, sweet, honey on the nose but dry on the palate with none of the sweetness. Finish is long and persistent

Closing

Have a preference for Rumbo al Norte in warmer vintage as the cool vintages seem to have a little funk and stems with the exception of 2016 and 2013. Overall 2016 is my favourite vintage of Rumbo al Norte, favourite Grand Cru Tumba del Rey Moro and favourite Village Villanueva
