Introduction

A look at Germany Riesling from the Mosel Saar Ruwer

Flight 1 - One Producer, same wine, 2 vintages (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese trocken 86 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): A mid-golden colour with an intense perfume of white flowers, honey, nectarine and a hint of kerosene. The palate is richly textured with ripe stone fruits of Cling peach, golden apple, mango and pineapple. The fun is all at the surface, with little depth and a lack of acidity, but it is a lovely, approachable, obvious riper style - quite lush, almost too much!

  • 2015 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese trocken 89 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): A mid+ gold colour with aromas of wet stones, minerals, wild herbs, crushed slate and orchard fruits. There is a steeliness about the wine.
The entry is lifted with vibrant acidity, and the intense apple flavours take over. It is very much a linear wine with poise and length, finishing with a mineral verve and bordering on lean - but it works.

Flight 2 - One producer, different wines, one older vintage (3 Notes)

  • 2016 Markus Molitor Riesling Alte Reben Mosel (White Capsule) 89 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): A mid-lemon colour with youthful aromas of almond, wet oatmeal, slate and ready brek. The palate has a richness to the texture but also a delicacy and sings with flavours of Meyer lemon, white flowers, white pepper and herbs underscored by tangy, almost tart acidity. Closes with an apple sauce and lemon extract. Mid-length, this is quite a slender framed wine.

  • 2016 Markus Molitor Riesling Alte Reben Saar (White Capsule) 89 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): A mid-lemon colour with youthful notes, starting with some reductive notes due to a high SO2 and obfuscated with chlorinated swimming pool, medicinal, and rubber notes. After a good swirl, I found minerals, chopped stones, almonds and white flowers. With a sharp acidity and some mid-palate richness, the wine is minerally with a long finish, if a little out of balance at this point. Potential.

  • 2008 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese ** (White Capsule) 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind):A medium gold colour, the aromas are bright riper stone fruits with white flowers, lemon-honey and some earth edges. The palate has a fine line of fine acidity, a glassy texture and linear drive. Wonderful focus, the stone fruits go to the background as some freshly picked orchard apples move into view. I liked the poise here, and the wine concludes long with some stoney, slightly savoury notes and a pinch of spice. Intense with a comforting richness underneath.

Flight 3 - One wine flight! (1 Note)

  • 2016 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese feinherb Ur Alte Reben 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): A light gold colour. Lifted, almost pungent fragrance of blossom, white flowers, chamomile and lemony notes. A vibrant citrus-tinged entry, the palate is captivating with excellent focus and linearity. A racy acidity balances the interplay of sugar, lemon peel, orange, and exotic fruited breakfast punch. Lovely delicacy as it glides across the palate and leaves a lasting lingering impression. A complex pure wine that closes with orange sorbet. Spanking wine!

Flight 4 - 2 Producers (2 Notes)

  • 2014 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Riesling J trocken 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): A medium gold colour suggests some age or ripeness, yet the nose is fresh with yellow flowers, orange blossom and lemon verbena.
An abundance of Meyer lemons enhances a ripe, rich wine with a bright acid energy, some white pepper and lemon leaf to lemon mint. Linear and focused, this is a precise and refined wine that skillfully keeps the plushness from the fruit in check with a belt of acidity. The Trocken style is evident, with the acid being noted but integrated seamlessly. It is very more-ish with a long-lasting finish.

  • 2015 Van Volxem Wiltinger Riesling 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): A pale gold colour, the nose has a touch reduction, accompanied by mineral, light peach (blossom) and almond notes. There is a steel wool and stone dust quality, perhaps slate?
A lighter-bodied entry, the wine is delicate with notes of almond paste and white flower at the forefront, supported by hints of apple and underscored by a distinct, searing acidity (apple malic). This gives a tight, linear shape that aligns with the classic Saar styling. Lifted, the wine leaves a lasting impression on the finish. It is quite a cool, firmish wine; I loved its elegance despite the fairly rasping acidity.
