    New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

    Drunk with Geoff and Marion - a very impressive showing of this wine. Lovely weight and rich autolysis character, combined with round fruit, defined by an excellent bead and frothy texture made this a very enjoyable bottle. Struck me as a bottle that has seen some age.

  • 2015 Albert Mann Riesling 90 Points

    France, Alsace

    Beautifully refined Riesling drunk at its peak of maturity - plenty of bottle age tertiary nuance, but still with youthful vibrancy. The texture is supple and satiny, and does across as slightly low-acid, but complete.

  • 2007 Craggy Range Syrah Le Sol Gimblett Gravels Vineyard 92 Points

    New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels

    Suave, modern and opulent. Drinking at its peak of maturity, but showing no signs of drying at the moment. Stylistically, very much a mid-Tasman Syrah. It has a slight menthol, Hawkes Bay fruit personality, but the ripeness (some sur maturité) and richness feel almost Australian in weight and apparent sweetness of body. Very classy, and a very ripe interpretation of Syrah. Clearly a “luxury” wine, but one that delivers, even if it is not classic, in terms of approach.

  • 2014 Super Sonoman Wines Pinot Noir 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    This is a delicious wine that is in full maturity and vibrancy, its very high alcohol is satiny smooth, although slightly warm, and the length of the palate is impressive and refined. In short, this is delicious and fun. But as a Pinot Noir, it is very far from the mainstream approach, practiced by Burgundy, California, Oregon, NZ, etc. I struggle to recognise varietal character, and if served blind, I simply don’t know what I would say it is - perhaps a Zin? Not sure! If I did go for Pinot, it would likely be due to the tannic structure, more than more classic varietal notes. But, again, this is really tasty, and not in a commercial way. It is a wine made with great care, by a winemaker who absolutely loves and is committed to this style. Huge oak influence, as is normal for the producer. Bottles in this condition will age beautifully for another decade, I suspect…

  • 2003 Kopke Porto Vintage 90 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    Drunk with Geoff and Marion - really wonderful! Very sweet, and while mature, this is still feels incredibly fruit forward, with a beautiful, creamy texture. The 20% alcohol is subsumed in the extravagant nature of the palate. A lot of fun to drink!
