Irene's House, St. Paul
Tasted Saturday, February 17, 2024 by rocknroller with 181 views
We had a group of 11 at Irene's for what seems to be a regular later winter event (IA, GA, RF/CF, KB/VB, DE/TE, SL, JP, Jp). Irene always does a killer job with hosting and preparing a gorgeous meal. Always sparkling conversation with this group and a fun mi of wines. Thanks everyone for making this great!

2005 Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Light plus gold color. Drank a glass over 2 hours. This was pretty tight out of the gate. It was reticent and not very giving. It really took between 30 and 60 minutes to start to evolve. Once it did, it was quite good. Lemon peel, ocean, briny, slate and apple, with building weight and definition. Last bottle of the Vaillons.

2022 Henri Bourgeois Sancerre Les Baronnes 90 Points
France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
Light straw color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. Fairly bold with cat pee, gooseberry, pink grpefruit, saline, spice. Very much in your face, lacks some finesse, that may come with time.

2011 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 91 Points
Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over 3 hours. This was a really odd showing for this tonight. IT started out with fusil, wax, stone and subtle lemon, linear, tart a touch of stone fruit, and the impression that the train had left the station. Then oddly 3 hours later, it had rounded the bend and was heading for home. Really swampy and earthy now, brine, dried apple, stones, sour lemon, no fusil, and nice length. Well, interesting, but I'm not so sure i would hang on to these though. Ultimately, 91pts.

2001 Robert Ampeau & Fils Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Medium red color with a 1cm transition to clear. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Iron, meaty, black cherry, pepper, some riper berries, a bit more rustic than I'd expect for Volnay, but very good indeed.

2018 Lynmar Estate Pinot Noir Monastery
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Medium dark red color. PNP, followed a glass over an hour. Green, bigger and fruity though not a typical RRV pinot, dark berries, young, needs a couple years. Score reserved, gut 89 to 91pts potential.

2012 VHR Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch 94 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for an hour and some slow-O time after. Drank a glass over an hour. Same bottle as I'd Rather...This was a treat, really supple, with nice aromatics, purple fruits, tar, cassis, boysenberry, tart blackberry, dense and full bodied, succulent on the palate, long and nicely textured with polished tannins and fine wood tones. In a great spot.

2001 Château Suduiraut 92 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Deep gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Hitting high on the nasal spectrum, very spicy tonight, taut, orange peel, orange marmalade, dried pineapple, toasted brown sugar, creme brulee, a little alcohol showing on the palate. Good, but not up to the best of bottles.
