Introduction

I decided it was time to make some new friends and enjoy some wines. Add an excursion to King's Island for the family and a Cinci road trip was born.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • NV Gruet Winery Brut Blanc de Noirs

    USA, New Mexico

Consistent with my experiences before - not complex, but well-done with a lot of appeal. Pale hint of colour, slightly spicy nose. Light on acid, decent depth and a nice clean finish.

  • NV Segura Viudas Cava Aria

    Spain, Cava

Light and refreshing, nice balance. Unfortunately had a bit of gunsmoke on the nose and palate which irritated me after a few sips.

  • NV Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Cuvée de Réserve

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Just delicious. One of my favorite NV/house champagnes. Good body with tight fruits like kumquats. Slight yeastiness and great body. Well-rounded and beautiful drinking.

  • 2004 Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) Chardonnay Los Vascos

    Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley

Straight-up chard character with a good body and aromatics. A strong vegetal streak that marred its overall enjoyability, but then again I may have had it too late in the progression and something else interferrred on my palate.

  • 2001 Velich Chardonnay Tiglat

    Austria, Burgenland

Light on the nose. Pretty yellow colour. Good fruit with a perceptible mineral core. Slightly obtrusive oak that could integrate over time. Nice fruit finish with hint of secondary mineral, peach and cream. Could fool me for a Meursault and has definite potential, but a bit low on the enjoyment factor at this time.

  • 2003 Pine Ridge Vineyards Chenin Blanc Viognier

    USA, California, Central Valley, Clarksburg

Certainly a first for this blend. Interesting, but can't say that it sums up better than its parts nor does it express either. A nice and balanced white. Very good with food. Would be an ideal restaurant / party option in lieu of the usual gang of suspects.

  • 1996 Ridge Geyserville

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Interesting, but this didn't do much for me as I felt it had passed over. Good structure, some interesting secondary notes of dried cherries and earth, but there was definitely something in it that bothered me. Others enjoyed it far more than I.

  • 2000 Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Nice open nose with clear oak and rich fruit. Big on the front with spicy oak, strong fruit and mocha notes. Agressive and lacking secondary notes, but a very good wine and quite enjoyable despite infantile state.

  • 2000 Talley Vineyards Pinot Noir Arroyo Grande Valley

USA, California, Central Coast, Arroyo Grande Valley

Dark colour, nice nose with slight smoke, coffee and brambly fruits. Good fruits, not over-extracted with elements of blackberry. Short, but very nice and well-matched with the lamb shank.

  • 1994 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Darker than expected, but definite bricking on the rim. Nose of bricks, clay, leather. Upfront cherries and more brick. Dusty tannins and warm notes with clove and piment. Just barely into its drinking window and a delight. Clean finish, medium length with a slight waxiness and more clay. Well-balanced and delicious.

  • 2001 Domaine Peyra Côtes d'Auvergne Les Liens

    France, Loire Valley, Côtes d'Auvergne

Consistent with previous - bracing acidity with a slight gaminess and a mineral structure. Very strong and rustic. Definite funk - deemed bret by some - on the nose. Nice finish, medium length with tart cherries and earth. Very well paired with lamb shanks.

  • 1971 Schloss Saarstein Serriger Schloss Saarsteiner Riesling Beerenauslese

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Yummy. Golden-tan colour, perfumey nose with nutty notes and orange. Lingering sweetness, but not cloying. Rich, more nutty notes and taffy fruits. Very delicious and amazing pairing with papaya dulce and goat cheese.

Closing

A very fun tasting. Slim's dished up some very good food and their open BYOB makes it a great restaurant for a tasting.
