Atelier - Chicago IL
Tasted Thursday, January 25, 2024 by Burgundy Al with 204 views
Wonderful dinner in support of a very worthy cause seeking diversity in a non-diverse industry. Great wines were shared. My first visit to Atelier, hopefully the first of many.
2002 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 93 Points
France, Champagne
From Methuselah, which kept this bright and vibrant, nicely balancing all the rich apple. Traces of berry in the middle, then ending with great brightness.

2013 Rare Champagne 90 Points
France, Champagne
Also very rich, this is clearly of the bready side of Champagne with very good depth. I enjoy this style in its youth, like tonight, with the fruit as pronounced as that breadiness, but it's not my preferred style.

2007 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Rosé Brut 93 Points
France, Champagne
Wonderful combination of apple, pear, quince, and berry with floral charm. Very good depth, very good now. I enjoyed this much more tonight vs when last tasted a few months back.

2012 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut
France, Champagne
My first time tasting this vintage. Very large and powerful but slightly angular for now. Very long finish, showing great potential for the future.

2008 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Rosé Brut
France, Champagne
This will likely be better than the (wonderful) 2007 just tasted, but is not nearly as enjoyable tonight. So much fruit, so much structure, but tight as can be.

2004 Tarlant Champagne Cuvée Louis 91 Points
France, Champagne
Lean and very bright with so much depth, just slightly angular from its structure. Still so easy to enjoy right now.

2009 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre Flawed
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
This bottle had been open for 3 hours but I still found it heavily reductive. Others enjoyed this more, but I could not.

2015 Domaine Dujac Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Ripe and fun, so easy to enjoy, but a good density sneaks into the middle here, adding another layer of enjoyment and interest. Drinking well now.

2010 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Wonderfully fresh and vibrant, prototypical Chablis with an inviting assortment of lemon and apple flavors plus aromas, some tart, some sweet. Very good length .

2004 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune 94 Points
France, Alsace
I haven’t had this wine in nearly a decade, and it hasn’t lost a step. Still so youthful, with a bright and exciting finish. Upside from here.

2017 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur Blanc Brézé 92 Points
France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur
Small glass. Intriguing combination of lots of citrus with faint tropical hints. Very good depth. Not even close to its peak drinking window, I won’t open my bottles until well after 2027.

2014 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Small glass alongside the 2015. Enticing floral start. Big and firm, nearly backward right now. So much depth on the very long finish. The rare Roulot that will benefit from more than a decade in the cellar.

2015 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Small glass, alongside the 2014. This 2015 is so alluring right now, so tasty, and so quaffable. Nice combination of orchard and stone fruit. So enticing, just without the brilliant depth of the 2014.

2004 Pierre Morey Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Magnum I brought to dinner. Popped-and-poured, this slowly opened up, reaching its peak at the 1-hour mark, then drinking well for at least the next hour, then declining from there. In that peak window there was so much concentration, giving both ripe and lean notes with very good depth and length. Clearly Grand Cru density here.

1996 Faiveley Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
So Old School, this has wonderful fruit purity of apple, pear, and quince with wonderful density. Amazingly bright and powerful. A real treat. No hurry to drink up.

2016 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Oddly enough the first time I am tasting this vintage. Floral and spiced with ripe orchard fruit and baked apple. Very good concentration, very good balance, very good now.

1964 Maison Leroy Grands-Echezeaux 96 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
This wine showed magically as always. So much here- red cherry & berry, pomegranate, slowly cooked porcini, dried rose petals, Boeuf Bourguignon, and so much more. So Vosne profiled with clear Grand Cru concentration. My WOTN. Merci, Mark!

2014 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Alongside 2016. Broad array of red fruits, certainly well spiced. Open knit and lacy, this is approachable and fun even though this is precociously young. 2016 is bigger and might become a better wine but certainly not for a while.

2016 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Alongside the 2014. Very concentrated red fruit that seems faintly roasted in its youth, but I expect that will soften with age. There is so much concentration here that I expect this will evolve into a great wine with cellar time, but doesn't seem fully composed right. I am optimistic here, see 92-94 point potential, 2028 forward.

2000 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
All red fruited aromas and flavors. Fully mature, well spiced with a near sweet note, added nuance from a touch of earth. Very good now.

2009 Weingut Keller Bürgel Spätburgunder 89 Points

Late night pour. Moderately ripe cherry, nicely energetic with good nuance. Weight/ density of a good Village level Burgundy.

2007 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Late night taste. Spiced red and black cherry with good volume and complexity, but not at the level of this in most vintages. A wine that has never thrilled me.

1945 Château Beychevelle
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien
Late night taste. Old and musty, slightly dirty. Some incorrectly thought this to be corked.

1934 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 94 Points
Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Absolutely amazing freshness and vibrancy that brings together two of wine's great complimentary elements - ripe fruit and acidity. Enough earth and spice to make it more interesting, but I expected even slightly more complexity from this level of maturity.

2016 Azienda Agricola San Giuseppe Rosso di Montalcino Stella di Campalto
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino
Late night taste. Maybe I don't understand this wine or my palate was tired, but this "just" seemed fun and enjoyable on the light side, and not quite worthy of the praise I hear.

2006 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Late night taste from magnum. Ripe and dense for Brunello, but lacking complexity to me. Maybe I should either stop asking for tasted of Soldera... or taste a whole lot more of it.

1991 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard 93 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Late night taste. I haven't tasted this wine in nearly two decades, and liked it much more tonight vs 2005. Layered and complex with spice and earth supporting even more fresh and mature black fruits. At a great place now.

2007 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT 90 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT
Late night taste. Interesting and complex, but I found it less perfectly balanced than other tasters. But still certainly very good.

Magnum. So much here- caramel, fig, dark chocolate, orange peel, Marcona almonds, and lots more. Very good length, persistent finish. A great wine.
