CdB MN Spring Event

This was the Spring Parlement and Induction for the CdB of MN. We had very nice attendance while inducting 4 new members.

• NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 169eme 89 Points

  France, Champagne

  Pale gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 45 minutes. This was shockingly disappointing, and I had to verify that this wasn't a mediocre starter Champagne, this was the Krug. Flat, mundane and tart with sour apple, this was also not helped by the serving temp. Nothing wrong with it, just didn't show.

• 2018 Château Mouton Rothschild Aile D'Argent Blanc 92 Points

  France, Bordeaux

  Light golden color. Drank a glass over an hour. This was very nice, with a waxy character, slate minerality, stone fruits, and saline, there is a round, plushness to the medium full bodied frame, and this has some hints of dried pineapple and tropical fruit overtones.

• 2011 Château d'Yquem 96 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  Very light golden color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. What a nose, this is bursting with a cornucopia of flowers, jasmine, acacia, and honeysuckle followed by such bright, fresh fruit notes with pineapple, peach and Mandarin orange creme brulee, mango, enhanced by the honey, orange zest and delightfully portioned spice notes. This comes off as youthfully bright, in such a great way - the early drinking window of 10 to 15 years, that for me is so appealing, really comes through. This has such poise with the honey, creamy texture, tropical fruits and the corraled sweetness. Loved it. Looking for this to just get better. 95+ to 96pts.

• 2003 Château Clerc Milon 91 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Very dark red/purple color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Splash double decanted and slow-O for 2 hours. CS55, M39, CF3, PV2, C1. Dried earth, dried wood, dark fruits, cassis, pencil lead on the nose. The palate shows an interesting dichotomy of ripeness while still displaying a green streak in the middle. There's plenty of glycerin that helps counter the wood, deeper and fuller than the even more austere '06.

• 2006 Château Clerc Milon 90 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Very dark red/purple color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Splash double decanted and slow-O for 2 hours. Tighter, lighter, and more linear, especially compared to the '03 side by side; cassis, pencil, oak, some coarse tobacco, a little damp earth, austere with quite firm tannins. There's room for some improvement here with time and more air.

• 1985 Château Mouton Rothschild 94 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Very dark red/purple color with a 2mm clear edge. Drank a couple glasses over 2 hours from a 6L Imperial. If I have this right, it was open for 3.5hrs, then was decanted into multiple 1 liter Erlenmyer flasks until serving about 2 hours later. The color is impressive, still dense and well saturated, in very good shape; Cigar box, pencil, tobacco leaf, minerals, cassis, dried violets, and a hint of eucalyptus on the provocative nose. The palate is full bodied, there's some nice funk and earth here, classic Pauillac, cassis, black raspberry, pencil and fine cigar, mineral and sweet wood notes and a little umami character. The tannins are nice, rounded and complimentary and this has good length. My second glass had quite a bit of sediment and was not quite as impressive as the first. It was great fun to drink this from Imperial!

• 1995 Château Mouton Rothschild 92 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Very dark red/purple color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes plus. Double decanted and recorked, then later slow-O for 2 hours. Tighter, sweet French oak, cassis, wood spice on the nose. The palate is dense, woody, purple fruits and tart black cherry, but it's more the wood and austerity that shows right now, very firm but not aggrerssive tannins. Like many '95's these can be recalcitrant; but based on previous bottles, I suspect that more air would have made some difference here.
