Introduction

I paired 7 wines with an 8 course meal. The food was in this order:

2 Oysters with Chablis
3 Brown buttered Scallops with Condrieu
4 Duck Rillettes, a rasberry reduction with Burgundy
5 Rasberry sorbet with boreal gin (trou normand)
6 Moose Osso Buco with Cote-Rotie and Hermitage
7 Lavender Creme Brulé
8 Dark Chocolate with Maury

Flight 1 - Full Supper (7 Notes)

  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Collection 243 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    (3/25/2024)

Parents anniversary supper, 8 courses, 7 wines.

Wine 1: Louis Roederer Collection 243 NV Champagne.

Paired with crab salad bites on crisps.

One of my favorite big name NV champagnes. Delicate and fine bubbles. Citrus and brioche nose. Lemon, brioche, green apple on the palate. Great mouthfeel and high acidity. Great stuff!

  • 2021 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    (3/25/2024)

Parents anniversary supper, 8 courses, 7 wines.

Wine 2: Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2021.

    Paired with Oysters.

What a pure and complex Chablis! Very clear color. The nose is all lemon and sea breeze. Let it get some air, it needs it. The palate was so light but had a lot to offer. Dried lemon peel, lime zest, herbs, high salinity, flint, sea weed. This paired beautifully with the oysters but on its own its easy to see that it needs more age. Great Chablis! It will probably get a 95pt score in some years from now.

  • 2020 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

    (3/25/2024)

Parents anniversary supper, 8 courses, 7 wines.

Wine 3: Guigal Condrieu La Doriane 2020.

    Paired with brown buttered scallops.

My white of the night! Golden color. The nose was so sexy on this wine! Rich candied Pineapple, honeysuckle, acacia and white florals, pine tar and some vanilla. On the palate this has tons of tropical fruits, pineapple, green guava, acacia, again with coniferous notes and some crushed stone. It really coats the mouth with a long finish! This is beautiful now and I'm sure it could handle some aging.

  • 2021 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    (3/25/2024)

Parents anniversary supper, 8 courses, 7 wines.

Wine 4: Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St George 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 2021.

Paired with duck rillette and raspberry reduction.

I really don't have enough experience with Burgundy yet but I know a good wine when I taste it. This is obviously too young but it already has so much to offer! Light ruby color. Nose of cherries, raspberries and strawberries, some forest floor and leather. All of it follows into the palate where the oak is also present. This was great, a very pure expression of Pinot Noir, vibrant red fruits, earthy notes all tightly packed with grippy tannins and a long finish.

  • 2019 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 97 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (3/25/2024)

Parents anniversary supper, 8 courses, 7 wines.

    Wine 5: Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 2019

Paired with Moose Osso Buco with red wine sauce.

Wine of the night for me and a lot of people at the table. Let it decant for multiple hours but I couldn't resist a small taste beforehand and wow was I hyped to taste it later! Huge whiff of smoked bacon, black fruits and black olives. Dark red color. The nose after it decanted was intoxicating! Again with the smoked bacon, blackberries and plums, vanilla, black olives following into the palate where you also got some pepper, expresso, herbs and spices. Smooth tannins despite it being a baby and a super long finish. This is an amazing Côte-Rôtie that will take on 20 more years easily! Wow!

  • 2017 E. Guigal Hermitage 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    (3/25/2024)

Parents anniversary supper, 8 courses, 7 wines.

    Wine 6: Guigal Hermitage.

Paired with Moose osso buco (second bottle after the Rostaing)

Dark red color. Raspberries and blackberries on the nose with pepper and vanilla. Palate has pepper, black fruits, herbs. I couldn't get many more notes after all the other wines. Ive loved this Hermitage but it does need a lot of air and after the flavor bomb that the Rostaing was this fell flat.

  • 1975 Domaine Thunevin-Calvet Maury 94 Points

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Maury

    (3/25/2024)

Parents anniversary supper, 8 courses, 7 wines.

    Wine 7: Thunevin-Calvet Maury 1975.

    Paired was dark chocolate.

This was the most unique wine we had. Dark and cloudy brick color. Nose of chocolate and candied orange peel. Very port like but with a lot of acidity. Palate has red fruits, raspberries, cranberries, blood orange, maple syrup, dried raisin, chocolate and some spice. Very interesting, crazy to drink a near 50yo wine.

My favorite white was the Condrieu from Guigal's la Doriane. My favorite red and WOTN for me was the Rostaing la Landonne which was incredible. Really fun evening
