Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2017 Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

I was shocked at this wine’s absolute elegance and grace. Certainly rich with black currant, cassis, plum, and more, but this also shows so much bright energy. Also great balance. This far exceeded expectations.

  • 2005 Colgin Cariad 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Magnum. An absolute behemoth. Dense and so ultra rich, the 10% Cab Franc was also front-and-center with animale, gamy, and wild character.. that some moments I adored and others I did not. So much here. I fully appreciate why this was many people’s WOTN, but. I found it almost too complex. I liked this more a decade ago, and think I might like it more again a decade from now!

55% Cab Sauv, 25% Merlot, 10% each Cab Franc and Petit Verdot.

  • 2010 Colgin IX Estate 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Alongside the 2012. Both 63% Cab Sauv, 20% Merlot, balance split between Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. Lots of black cherry, berry, plum with some dark chocolate, licorice, and cigar box. Wonderful brightness and elegance, especially on its longish finish. Upside from here. I preferred this 2010 over the more hedonistic 2012, but the group was divided. I think there is further upside from here.

  • 2012 Colgin IX Estate 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Alongside the 2010. Both 63% Cab Sauv, 20% Merlot, balance split between Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. Ultra rich black plum, currant, cassis, dark chocolate, espresso, and sweet spice. This easily manages to retain very good balance, but just doesn't have the same cut and grace as the 2010 for me, but this is certainly very tasty right now.

  • 2013 Colgin Syrah IX Estate 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Rich black cherry and plum with black pepper and clove. Dense and meaty, this was certainly easy to enjoy, but slightly lackluster compared with the Colgin Cabernet blends earlier in the dinner. This was described as Colgin's interpretation of Côte-Rôtie, which made me think 2-3% of Viognier would add something bright and more nuanced here.

Flight 2 - A few extra wines opened (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Nicely Vosne spiced with good weight, very good lengtg, just slightly lacking the depth of this great terroir. Still backward, but that’s Malc, so possible upside?

  • 2018 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

An excellent Vosne village with great depth and nearly 1er Cru density. Red and black cherry with very savoy spice. A real success in this vintage with few wines this approachable.
