Introduction

Sounds like a band, and one we'd like to keep together. In what was hopefully not the last hurrah for anytime soon, Craig hosted a dinner at his place with Don Saunders at the helm. These dinners have become fan favorites so to speak. Don NEVER disappoints with his menu, creativity and attention to detail. Tonight, as expected, was great! We had a group of 8 of us in attendance with wines to match the significance of a Don Saunders dinner (CV,DM,DD,SS,CS,LI,JV,KB). Thanks everyone, great night.

  • 2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 96 Points

    France, Champagne

    Light gold plus color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. It was fun to drink this 48 hours after having the first of my '08's. That '08 was absoluting stunning, and now revisiting this old friend that I also adore, did nothing to dimminish my feelings regarding the supremacy of the '08. But this '06 is a beauty too, as we we've said time and again. Effusive nose; toasty, deep baking bread, sour dough, apple tart, airy, crystalline minerality, pear, sublte nectarine. The palate shows fine stone, pear, bright, honey, lemon, lemon cream pie, toast, creamy texture, long and lifted. Great showing as usual. 96+pts.

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Édition 168ème 94 Points

    France, Champagne

    Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. More bold than the Comte before it, just a touch of oxidativeness creates a different vibe; apple, quince, ginger and sour dough on the nose. The palate is bigger and layered, with apricot jam, Grand Mernier, lemon confit, apple peel, subtle cherry, subtle toast. 94+pts.

  • 2005 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Light medium gold plus color. Drank a glass over an hour plus in mini vertical of '05, '10, and '12. This was in good shape, while showing the development that one would expect. There's sea air, red apple, parafin, sea air, lemon, caramel and beeswax on the nose. The palate has a little sense of melancholy compared to the riveting '10 and flamboyant '12. There's lots of orange, lemon, oyster shell, ocean floor, on sleek, medium bodied, if mellow palate. I think the only question here, is where do you like them best. 93+ to 94pts.

  • 2010 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus in mini vertical of '05, '10, and '12. This was my favorite of a really enjoyable trio. Steely and bright on both the nose and palate, ocean airm limestone, white flowers and slate comes through on the nose. The palate is almost bracing with the brisk acid and striking minerality, tart lemon and more subtle Cara Cara orange. Great purity and precision. Loved it. 95+pts.

  • 2012 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus in mini vertical of '05, '10, and '12. Also delicious, with a more tropical bend, is the flamboyant 2012. More juicy on the palate, with Mandarin orange out front, nectarine, and a hint of tropical fruit followed by some mouthwatering tropical fruits, pretty mineral notes. This is rounder, but still showing plenty of acidity, and it's very classy. 94+ to maybe 95pts.

  • 2008 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin 96 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Medium dark red plus color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Decanted for 3hrs prior to diner & slow-oxed for another 2+ hrs. same bottle as Chablis28. I love this nose with high toned and lifted intensity and perfume, red cherry, rose petals, bay leaf, dried rose potpourri, leather, iron and hints of anise. The palate is shows this pure cherry up front, medium plus in body, with a clinging soft mouth coating texture, on top of the melange of mineral notes and floral essence. This was wonderful.

  • 2010 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Dark red plus color with a 7mm transition to clear. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Captivating leather flows from the nose, saddle, funk, cherry, Asian spices, damp earth and fine ground pencil. The palate shows cool cherry notes, red currants, cherry cough drops, leather, funk and spice with a medium full bodied frame. Really nice, 94+pts.

  • 1978 Château Beychevelle 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Dark red color with a 7mm bricked edge. Slow-O for 90 minutes. This had a nice texture to it, pencil, cassis, lots of dried earth, peat, cherry, rustic with rustic tannins and a full bodied palate. Started wonky, but turned out well. 92 to 92+pts.

  • 1966 Château Beychevelle

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    This bottle had a top shoulder fill with a saturated cork and signs of seepage. Splash double decanted for sediment. The color wasn;t bad, but unfortunately, this just came off somewhat madeirized and not anywhere near where it should be.

  • 1966 Château Beychevelle 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Dark red color with an 8mm bricked transition. Low neck fill, splash double decanted and filtered with cheese cloth. Drank a glass over an hour. I thought this bottle showed very well. Pencil with a perfume of red fruits, leather and more leather; cassis, damp forest floor and dried mushroom. The palate expands on the leather, earth with cherry, followed by dark berry fruits with hints of cassis and blue fruit with pencil on the back end. 92+ to 93pts.
