Grivot and d'Angerville paired with roast chicken.

    Reticent nose.
    Not balanced on the palate and acidic.
    The finish was pretty sweet with a date like note but slightly short.
    Was hoping for more. Have had better 2013s. Far cry from Bellene Les Suchots of same vintage.

  • 2004 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans

    Beautiful colour with bricking.
    Spicy nose and finish.
    In the context of the vintage this should be considered good but the fruit is lacking.
    I suspect in a more solar vintage this could be excellent.
    No tannins perceptible.

  • 2012 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay

    Fresh nose - strawberry and floral nose.
    Correct but general feeling was that Volnay is watery - palate was a bit thin.
    Sorbet like acidity.
    Tannins resolved.

  • 2019 Château de Beauregard (Joseph Burrier) Pouilly-Fuissé

    Saline palate with good finish. Nice concentration without being cloying or over-ripe. Obviously well made though QPR may be an issue here. Not a bottle I would have bought myself and only had the opportunity to try it through Bo's generosity.

Flight 2 - Burgundy vs New Zealand (2 Notes)

Paired with mushroom risotto. Good duet with the earthy mushroom.

  • 2011 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets

    Beautiful golden colour.
    Honeyed nose with a hint of smoke.
    What sets this apart as an excellent wine was the great nutty palate which continues through to the long finish. From my limited experience of Chassagne I think the nutty finish typifies this village.
    Wine of the weekend in Cardiff - and probably equal to 2010 Moreau Maltroie.
    Great value in the context of an aged white burgundy.

  • 2017 Kumeu River Chardonnay Maté's Vineyard

    New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu

    Light yellow with a slightly less desirable green tinge.
    Appley and floral nose. Fresh.
    Bags of fruit tempered by high but balanced acidity. Tastes very young and primary.
    Blind I could mistake this for Puligny.
    Unfortunate for this Kumeu we had this side by side with 2011 Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Les Caillerets which was singing.
    I think Kumeu’s estate chardonnay gave me more enjoyment at more than half the price.
    My 2022 Mate’s will sit in the cellar for at least 10 years.

Flight 3 - Red Burgundy (2 Notes)

Paired with rib of Aberdeen Angus beef.
Both wines better with food.

    Nose of cherries - but not singing. I wanted a bit more nose from this fabled vineyard.
    Good fruit framed by chalky tannins for pinot and big structure. The structure slightly overpowering initially.
    Became a lot better with air but by the time I discovered this we only had little left in the bottle!

  • 2011 Domaine François Lamarche Clos Vougeot

    2nd time and better this time.
    Fresh nose of cherries and sous bois. Exotic spice really showing tonight giving it an edge over the 2013 Jadot Clos Saint Jacques.
    All elements in balance but a gripe I have of this weekend's reds is the lack of fruit concentration.

Closing

For once I preferred the whites over the reds.

Unfortunately none of the reds had that intense sweet pinot spice I look for - the Clos de Vougeot was the closest but still fell short of others had previously in terms of intensity.

The Chassagne was perfect - I think I prefer Chassagne over Puligny-Montrachet.

We had a representative range of Volnay - having tried 3 different producers of Volnay now - Montille on separate occasion. I am convinced Volnay's not my kind of wine. I had hoped it would be in a similar vein to Chambolle but I found the wines lacking in concentration and would describe them as watery.
