Four Fine Wines with Mr. Georg Riedel Himself

Introduction

Four fine wines were tasted with a seminar from Georg Riedel. The wines themselves were all selected by Jon Smith, owner of Cork & Bottle fine wines and more in Mid-City New Orleans and included a Sancerre, a Puligny-Montrachet, a Red Burgundy, and an Estate Grown Rutherford California Cabernet. The glasses displayed and tasted from included four glasses from the tasting kit in Riedel's Vitis series, which everyone there got to keep at the end.

  • 2006 Domaine de la Perrière Sancerre 91 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

    Beautiful floral notes greeted us as we went into the tasting room, and they came from this wine. I think there may be a touch of semillon in this wine -- there are some light honey hints on the nose and palate, but they do not take away from the beautiful floral and citrus notes of the sauvignon blanc within. The finish is a tinge hot and the wine lacks the complexity of a superstar, but is still fantastic, especially for the price.

    I agree with the guy who wrote the note before me -- this wine is a bit tight and just starting to spread its wings, but is nothing spectacular at this point. Its best days lie ahead, and it may be phenomenal.

  • 2004 Hewitt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    This guy's wound up tight, but from what I tasted, it has the potential to be a blockbuster in a few years, if cali cabs are what you like. Excellent notes of graphite and very well-balanced dark fruits in this great effort. I think it will be great in four or five years.

Closing

All four wines were exceptional, and the demonstration itself was phenomenal. Mr. Riedel was friendly and his stemware spoke for itself as great instruments used for experiencing fine wines. If I ever have the pleasure of seeing Georg Riedel again, I will find a way to it, come hell or high water.
